Looking for replacement pinion

I have an early model Calcutta 200 whose brass pinion gear is worn.

Rather than looking for a regular brass replacement pinion, I hope to replace it with a steel one that has the same gear teeth.

I hope this will reduce wear on the new pinion when fishing heavy drags since it is of a stronger metal than the brass main gear.

Can anyone direct me to where I can get such a part? or is there any other reel that has such a part interchangeable with the Calcutta?

Thanks

LL

Re: Looking for replacement pinion

LLC,

I really wish I could tell you one way or the other, but my best suggestion to you is to post this query to the Shimano Representative at Allcoast. He goes by the Nik of "Bantam 1" and he is very helpful. Make sure you have the model year, name and if possible the model number in your schematics.

This is the link to the right sub-forum on Allcoast;

AllCoast SportFishing - Viewing topics in Shimano Product Support

Good luck and let us know how things work out.

Re: Looking for replacement pinion

Lawrence dude,

I just read your post and the replies in Allcoast.... Unless casting distance is an absolute must, why don't you just change to another reel, maybe even a Trini 12 or one of the smaller Ocea Jiggers that would give you the drags and power you need?....

If you have to replace 5 or 6 gear sets, I reckon it would cover much of the cost of another reel... Just a thought dude...

Saimee.

P.S. I was pretty impressed with the "grind off the gear wrapped on shaft" incident.... Great stuff dude, fish hard.

Saimee.

More accurately, I'm a cheap charlie fisho hahaha. I've a '73 make Abu Ambassadeur 6500C that was still serving active duty till I laid off fishing few years back.

All these new high tech Digital control gear are real nice and all. But I spent good hard-earned money to buy those gear I owned in the first place, and feel that it is a pity to retire them for newer, more efficient gear, when they can still be pressed for duty.

I tell myself I'll retire them when they break, but when any one breaks down from wear and tear, my character compels me to get it repaired. After which, I have no choice but to continue to use it since it's working well. Sigh, character flaw lah.

Somehow, there is also pleasure in "Tuning" my reels.

BTW, what's a Trini 12?

Re: Looking for replacement pinion

Old reels?....

Yeah dude, I still have a 20+yr old Special Senator 114H that I have fixed countless times and for a while sat as a bag of loose parts for about 3 years before I figured out how to fix it without getting a new sideplate.... I now use it to empty and refill my other reels, 'cos its got a huge capacity for braid.

A Trini 12 is a Shimano Trinidad 12.... the smallest of the Trinidad family. I am not sure, but I reckon you can get well over 10lbs of drag, since it essentially runs the similar drag stack as a Trinidad 30. The smaller ocea jiggers are also well worth the money and come with the auto gear engage when you turn the handle.

Check out these links:

Smaller Jiggers:

SHIMANO SALTWATER REEL OCEAJIGGER LURE

A hybrid jigging Calcutta:

AXIS 100/101 Version2

Some reels to mull on dude... no need to get all that digital gear dude...

Regards,

Saimee

Adoi, I've been poisoned bad! Tonight cannot sleep already! Haha. Wonder if it is available locally in Singapore tackle shops.
