Lightbulb Carbontex Drags for OJ4000P & 5000P

Dear All,

I would like to let everyone know that Smoothdrags now make proper fitting OJ4000P & 5000P Carbontex drag washers. No need to modify the TN40/50 ones any more.

I received a sample from Smoothdrags yesterday and they are perfect.

My great thanks to Chris Wong from BCS in Auckland for building up the momentum for getting Smoothdrags to manufacture these washers and also a BIG thank you to Dawn Geider of Smoothdrags for taking the initiative and the chance to respond to the needs of the guys and gals running these reels.

Best Regards,

Saimee

Dude,

It is possible to mix the washer types. Carbontex washers themselves come in a variety of weaves, thicknesses and textures. For example in a set of Ctex washers for the OJ, you will find three different textures and weave types ranging from medium coarse to very fine.

Most of the time, the main reason to mix in HT100 washers is to achieve a certain optimum drag stack height. HT100 is available in some pretty thick versions. I have done this myself once of twice in the past before Ctex came out with complete sets. I still do it for certain reels which do not have a perfect Ctex match.

Regards,

Saimee

the guy whom i heard from, actually mix HT100 with Ctex. in order to achieve more drags on his 4000p. rather than to achieve the stack height.. think is 3 piece HT100 out of the total 5 piece. which make me wonder, can the drag gear n main shaft take the load or not.

I myself hv yet to really test the "juice" out of those pieces u sent me. like u say 16-18kg drag will really stress out my old back man. :P

Re: Carbontex Drags for OJ4000P & 5000P

An OJ4000p of mine is using ctex which is modified frm a trinidad ctex and it achieves 28kg. could be more as my scale ran out at 28kg and the line is still not peeling out. Scary thought tho, tried it on nearly 20kg drag and was nearly pulled off overboard...

Thanks Saimee, but the credit goes to you too, after-all you sent off the drag samples. I got my samples yesterday & ran the vernier over them, drag stack height is very close to original. I wonder if Dawn could use a thicker washer or 2, it would increase drag even more! I'll have to strip out the washers in my NEW 5000P to istall the new washers in order to test them.

Dude,

I was the one who installed the drags and I am NOT actually sure why they have reached that level. In any case, I have warned F., not to run that high a drag if he doesn't want to end up becoming bait or blowing up his rod/reel/nupitals.....

I think I'll need to have a look in the reel, just in case there is something else going on.

Chris mate,

Yeah, I got the samples too and to be honest, I wouldn't mind them running all the thicker weaves too, you might get an extra 5kg or so. BUT, right now, I need a reel to test it on and unfortunately, I don't have a "P" reel, just the 4.9:1 ratio.... maybe I'll swap gears with my OJ4000P....

Regards,

Saimee
