Rep Power: 4 ![]() | Mapur Catch Report-25-26th Sept 05' Anglers: 1. Bro RK 2. Zul Zikista 3. Suresh 4. Azlan - ga'ban 5. Rosman (KL) 6. Tommy - tt 7. Mr Chia - tt in law Tekong: Amri & crews Zulman, Atan & Suratman (chef) Weather: hot on 1st day but slight overcast on 2nd day Winds & waves: ard 10-15 knots most time and abt 0.5 - 1 m waves average Day 1: Sun 25th Sept- As usual our kakis will meet up at TMFT sarbat stall for coffee/teh tarik & some light breakfast. Went to collect tickets and met up with the rest for our usual dosage of caffiene and while having coffee, dark clouds gathered over us and threatened to dampened our spirit. Azlan was the last to arrive..but still early enough not to miss the ferry. Anyway, journey to Tanjung Pinang was smooth and weather has calmed down and as usual jokes were aplenty. As usual upon arrival, Jamil will be there to handle our baggage..but this somehow he wasn't around so I got make sure all our barangs are safely off loaded before customs clearance which was pretty smooth cos not much visitors that day. As usual we went to the market for dry gooddies, fruits and kakis ciggies before we head to Jln Tugu Pahlawan for a curry fish head lunch at Selera Rasa. After lunch, we head off to collect our prawns as ordered before making our way to Trikora. 1.30 pm: Reached Trikora and was surprised to see Bob & his group still there cos I thought he came on Friday. Was told by Bob that catches wasn't good and we should expect very strong currents tonite. At the kelong, met up with the lady teacher who's a regular on Aziz's boat..wow this lady is something man.. 2.30 pm: All ready & off we went towards Mapur/Meraps area. Reached the 1st spot ard 4.30 pm and started fishing...current was slightly fast but still mamageable on sinker 12. Here, good sizes of leng chiams, groupers and the usual amoys were hooked up. After an hour and a half here, we shifted to a spot close to some tukuns kind of structure where Bob caught Sagais last night. No action here and current was dead calm so we shifted close to Aziz boat 30 mins later. It was getting dark and the watch showed it wasn't even 6.30pm so light on and Suratman prepared dinner. There were some good action from the next boat and from the radio conversation of the 3 tekongs, Aziz got some good size Kaci & coral fishes while Ah Kia had only a leng chiam to show as current out sea was pretty fierce..lucky thing Am decided to take shelter close to Mapur. 7.30 pm: During dinner, Amri told me of his plans for the night...which was to move out ard 10 pm to a wreck abt 40 mins away so meantime we just hang around there and continued fishing. Zul brought a dish of chicken cooked with black sauce and we also had tempe bachem and tahu with the usual wings. 8.30 pm: Am signal to moved out to a spot closeby to wait for the 11 pm window. There were some good actions here with some kacis, leng chiams and kees but here was where I hooked on to a good size pari on my light Ofmer Sable rod. Pretty strong resisitance from the bugger and with a light outfit, I had no choice but to try and tire the fella down. Other kakis fishing at the rear were sporting enough to reeled their line and waited patiently for me to bring up the fish. It took me a good 40 mins before I finally managed to subdue the Pari...a male species of around 12 kg, no wonder the great fight from the fella right to the last turn of my Daiwa Grandy reel knob. 11.00 pm: By now, currents and winds started to pick up and its getting rocky a bit and naturally the bites stopped instantly. Am decided to take a risk and moved out further. Not much catches were registered here besides some squids though there were some good misses by kakis. Meanwhile, Nemo & Rosman were pretty quiet and not much action nor catches from them including Azlan too, who haven't got any hit Day 2: 26th Sept 1.00 am: Current slowed down so Amri decided to move even further out sea to join up with Ah Kia's bulat spot, about 1.5 - 2 hrs away so its a nice time for some good rest after the pari aches and for the rest too. 3.00 am: Heard the engine slowed down, went on deck to check and saw Ah Kia's boat some 70 meters away, not much activity on that boat but can still figured out Ah Kia moving about as usual when catches are bad. Heard from crew that Ah Kia boat got a bulat so they should be around these spot. Zul, Azlan & tt's in law were still stranded somewhere in pillow island so its left with just me, Nemo, Rosman & tt to do the job. 30 mins later...wham! Nemo's rod bent,..he had a hard time taking it out. I told keep pumping, dun allow for any slack for these bludgers...have way up...alamak, lost it..I told are you sure?..then he pumped again and its still fish on....finally, his 1st bulat in Tanjung Pinang..close to 3 kg. Nemo never stop grinning after that....next was yours truly with another 3 kg bulat...so told Zulman to wake up the rest cos bulats are here. TT was next, struggling with his Torium to bring up something heavy..dun looked like bulat to me...a Goldie perhaps..then finally up on the surface..GT ! yes a GT of around 6 kg estimated. Nemo pulled up another one and can see that he's really enjoying himself. All the bulats are of good size of around 2 - 3.5 kgs. TT got his second GT next..slightly bigger this time...hmmm..first time luck with our team I guess. By this time Zul, Azlan & Mr Chia had their line down too. Next was Azlan with another good size bulat , followed by 69 yr old Mr Chia...syiok ah!..he said to me later. Till now everyone caught a bulat except for Zul & Rosman. Rosman's luck came close to dawn when he caught a chermin and the biggest bulat of close to 4 kg after losing 1 earlier. Zul still has no luck on those bulats. We continued fishing there and the species got smaller as the 1st ray of light simmered thru the horizon. At the same time just above us, the sight of dark angry clouds don't look promising but we decided to stay on. 7.30 am: Suratman prepared maggie pancake for us and this delicious simple breakfast was simply too good to refuse for the new guys. Some distance away, a twister can be seen and a smaller one were coming close to us and hit the boat....whissssssssss....my cap flew into the water in that split second nad luckly, tide was moving towards the boat direction so Suratman helped to scoop up my cap as it nears the boat. Meanwhile, not much activity can be seen on Ah Kia's boat..heard he started engine and off he go...I thought to another spot cos they're on 3d2n trip but it was later confirmed that they decided to head back to kelong cos many had difficulty handling the rough seas. After a few more leng chiams and groupers, we moved to our last spot. All this while, some kakis tried with live prawns but with little success cos current was still strong. The parrots dun normally venture out from their hole so can't target them either. A few more leng chiams and groupers and small size bulats, ard 10 am... I signal for Amri to head back to kelong cos its another 3 hr drive from this spot. Summary: Not a bad outing and I would say an average (5 / 10 ) in terms of catches but the good thing was, the bulats are finally back. The new kakis did well to intergrate smoothly in spite of the short intro. We still managed some good actions throughout albiet a little short in terms of fish size.and quantity.....as me and Nemo declared throught the trip, dun worry bout the weather as long as we're together! Enjoy the pics if you dun mind...... Note: Azlan (ga'ban) had also posted this trip Catch Report at FK..check it out. Meantime, other kakis can post here if they have anymore pics taken on the boat. Rgds Bro RK
