Mapur 2-3 July Catch Report

Not much excitement to pen down on this trip's Catch Report in terms of catches but I must say this is one hell of a trip that should be long remembered for its food fiesta extravaganza on the boat rather than fishing itself. So do bear with me on the contents of this slightly different CR just for a change

For a start, as usual after the stop at Toko Murni..I hijacked the team towards Rumah Makan Selera Rasa where we tucked in curry fish head(Ikan Bulat), ayam panggang bumbu & kicap plus tempe bachem/tahu and assam rebus and washed down with ayer sari timun. This was a 1st for most kakis except for Hj Pardi & myself who've been here to eat couple of times. Good thing I went to the gents there later cos I just realised we're short of the Ikan Selar Bakar dish when I saw the staff still grilling the fishes...which had to be packed as we had finish our lunch.

Lunch done, we headed towards Trikora & guess what.. its durian season there and unable to resist the tempting views of rows after rows of road side stalls showcasing the King of fruits, we stopped and bought 4 pcs to bring on the boat after the customary pinching & sampling test on a few good species.

As usual, once at the kelong.. everyone got about to set up their gears & around 2.30 we hit the waters with our usual tekong.I went to the bridge and chat with Am and discuss the plan for this trip. Was briefed on the tides pattern and was told that a few trips earlier the catches weren't that good...anyway we here already so after 40 mins we hit spot number 1 so Game ON

Went to the aft and everyone lowered down their lines....1st to hit was Sha SB with a nice groupie of 1 kg followed by Nemo with the same specie...cries of Malaysia Boleh was heard each time Nemo brought up a fish. On the way to the next spot, Ghani suggested to open up the durians and everyone joined in. Let me recall..we had pineapples, watermelon, pears and bananas on board phew...some fruity trip this one.

At the 2nd spot...dun know whether myths or what,..after eating the Durians...almost everyone pulled up Duris Jahan one after another. ..but at least it gave us some bites & a good warming ups..so can't complain. Shah Sb pulled up a nice Kaci later on and Pardi got a few white fish on his Torium. By now winds started to pick up and it got a bit choppy and on one occasion, the pounding wave hit the boat real hard that Sha BA fell off his chair...luckily nothing bad came out of this episode.

Dinner now...aaaahhhh, this is the best part. It wasn't in the plan but somehow Sha BA managed to skip off with the driver and bought a cake at Bintang Mall while everyone was busy at Toko Murni. Nice gesture on the part of Sha BA to celebrate his namesake's birthday on the boat. I gathered everyone including the crews and after a short speech and doa selamat by yours truly.....Shah cut the cake and we topped it up with a great dinner of Ayam Belardo from Shah SB and Udang Lemak Cili Padi by Sha Ba with the usual chicken wings from our boat chef...real sumptous this time round as I got to savour the whole prawns instead of just the head as of last time.

Everybody looks real heavy on the tummy by now as we moved on to another spot after dinner to target for Bulats. Was told by Am that the residing tide changes will cause the current to pick up speed and that we could only fish ard 3 am. Not suprisingly, one after another..everyone gone missing and by midnite,..only me, Shah boleh and Suresh were the ones left to fish. Hj Pardi already KO after dinner and Mat Popper didn't even bother to wake up for his dinner But the real shock was my usual 2 orang kuat..Zul & Osman..also KO early.. due to heavy loadings during dinner.. .

Suratman caught a nice 8 kg ray and except for a 2 kg Cuda by Sha Boleh, there wasn't any other worth mentioning here. Heard earlier that the other boats didn't fare any better too...

After breakfast, we moved on to the last spot and here only 2 parrots, some ah mois & kerisis, a small spotted ray and groupies were hit. At ard 10.30 am we called it a day and as usual I signalled to tekong to drive us back to shore. At the kelong we saw the catches on aziz's boat..they got 7 Goldies 2 - 4 kg 10 good size Cudas and duris too. Found out from Aziz that he decided to do drifting as current was not conducive and thats how they hit those buggers.

We somehow didn't capture any pics so sorry to dissappoint our friends hoping to see our catches but as usual we SEPAKERs are a real bunch of good witted, happy anglers with high spirits no matter what the catches were..always hopeful and never short of jokes and jibes.

If thats not enough, let you all know that on our way back to ferry terminal, we stopped again at the opossite durian stall and gasak 10 more pieces. Luckily Sha & Ghani reminded me to ask the owner to slow down cos this guy just happily opening up one durian after another as if he's treating us for free ....total cost..Rp 130,000..not value for money cos the ones we bought earlier were much better in terms of quality.

Next stop as usual is to Sari Mas...we bungled out packets of kerepek tempe, rempeyek and empeng among others. Meanwhile on the ferry,..the jokes & chats continued...typical of team SEPAK..

My verdict on this trip:
Catches - 3 / 10......
Company - 11/10...
Food - 10/10...

Waiting for the next ....TENGGOL special thanks to Nemo for your maiden trip with the team....albiet not a fantastic one

No kecoh this time. If all future trips
goes on smoothly as this one (except for
the catch rate) you may want to consider
to change the last abbrevaition "K" to Killer instead
of kechoh. Hehehe. Joking only.

Nice write up but you missed the jolok game
between Singapore & Malaysia. I missed the final score because
everyone were busy trying the C&P (catch & pay) to
bring home some high grade grouper. In the end no one caught any fish
because of the "Time Out" duration given by Mat Popper.

Agreed with you that this is the most lowest catch rate
of all our fishing trips, nevertheless the fun and food galore we had
was the best of all the trips we went.
Fishing is like a game. You win some and lose some.
So Team Sepakinans must never give up.
Next one be a better trip.

on second thoughts, I or someone else should've taken a shot or 2 of the overall catches. Recalling back..it wasn't that bad after a few more " toppings" of macks, selars, ketaraps & tudung periuk from Elly .

Ya forgot too that we got a couple of 1.5 kg Unga Tanda that nite..

As for the game of pool between Malaysia & S'pore ,.its 1 up for Nemo after 1 rack,.. macam tak faham faham aje.. sports pun ada politik jugak had to be a good host lah otherwise nanti Nemo merajuk and won't want to entertain us if we go Tenggol next month.

So you OK from that fall or not buddy... takut kena go for another OPs pulak :P

I totally agree with RK's rating. We had great companion. Durian pun best until dapat Ikan DURI.

The rocked so much that I can even feel it when I am on my bed to sleep. Can still feel the melayang.

I am OK, except for the swelling around the affected area which happened to my old injury.
I was sitting on the plastic chair when suddenly the boat swayed to the left and right, throwing me of balance.

No I did not dive into the water...due to the amount of food on board, i did not think I would float 2 sec on the water....hehehe ...
but all in all was great fun with the team...non stop jokes, and Malaysia boleh, SIngapore Boleh and all the Daiwa vs Shimano vs Penn deal that went on....looking forward for future trips with all the rest....

Hi Bro Nemo,
Glad you enjoyed our company though the catch was not productive.
First time met you and I must conclude you are the easy going guy,
MALAYSIA BOLEH.
Like I always said I am no expert but am willing to learn and experiment
new methods. Unfortunately, my R & D on the last trip did not materialise
as I expected it to be. Will give it a try the next trip. Nice sharing of
information and techniques with you on fishing.
Awaiting for the Tenggol trip.

We did call Elly to recce the"after the bridge" spot but the catch there was also bad bro....manage to get 2 tengriri papan and a few selar bro. That what we only manage to "haul" from that "spot" eheh u know where it is...hhaha.

Hi Mark,..long time never hear from you.

Yup, like what Zul had mentioned, we radioed back from the boat to Elly for some top-ups like threadfins, grunters & macks at ' that place you know where' but unfortunately the harvest from the islanders were equally bad lah.

Anyway as usual if catches are bad, Elly did "expand" our catches slightly with what he had left in the freezer....

So when wanna meet up for coffee with us again...16th OK ??
