    popping method

    Hi guys,

Do you guys pop with the rod on the gimbal belt or holding the rod with the rod tip near the water (like in the Komodo Kingfisher vcd). In the short time that I've started popping I've only used the 1st method. I only use the 2nd method when the popper comes close to the boat.

To those who use the 2nd method, do you find it easier to pop with it. I'm guessing this method can be used mainly for chuggers as I cant imagine using it with pencils...

    Any comments?

    Cheers,

    Chris

Personally, I find it safer to pop with the rod tucked under my arms. If you are free next weekend, join us for a popper casting session and I'll show you how I work pencils/chuggers. Having the rod tip pointed high, positioned in your gimbal can be risky business when fishing high drags. I've nearly been yanked over the sides before so it's strictly "under arms" popping for me now.

    Mike,

Thanks for the info. I guess I've not hit anything that big to drag me around. Hopefully will have that opportunity sometime soon.

Will let you know about the weekend.

    Cheers

MHO, there is no fix rules or methods of popping..as long as you can create the desired effect from the type of popper you are using...chugging,skipping,sweeping..etc.

Yes...it's dame tiring...esp.when you have no hits..so you choose to rest your rod on the gimbal belt and work your popper...it's Ok..as long as you must always keep your eyes on the popper..so you can react when you get a strike..never take your eyes off the popper.

Guess what ever method you use..under arm,on the gimbal belt..etc..one must always watch your popper and do not get distracted from this.

Use whatever method you are comfortable with...you can even switch methods accordingly..If you must rest..you must rest..recharge for another cast.

One important point...choose a drag setting you are comfortable with..and not one that your buddy tells you to use..
Different anglers can handle different drag pressures..
