| Super Moderator | Sorry for the late reply mate. Its interesting that Kingies actually take to poppers since they are mostly caught on jigs! Do you guys cast poppers when they're hitting bait on the surface? Here's a few of my humble poppers... sold away most of them as I reckon hanging dollar bills on my wall would make more sense |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | We fish off the ocean rocks, so the water depth varies from 3-4m to 30m or so deep depending on where you are. Its not often I get to see schools of kings hitting bait on the surface, but kings will chase a popper down if its worked right. I cast in a fan pattern out at various distances, but most kings are in close to the rocks. Instead of hanging dollar bills we instead might as well also just throw them straight into the water as the kings tend to bury you under the closest rocks. More success has been on the skipping type, but am gonna try the bloopping ones more to see if I can get hits on those. Surface strikes from kings on these surface lures is great.......the 3rd and 4th in your pic - were they the ocea poppers...how did you find them? Have been out on boat trips a few times, but in those instances we have dropped live baits down instead of jigs too. Next time will try some jigs to see how they compare. (i should add - Im not far off owning a piece off reef where I go considering how much gear has been donated to it due to bustoffs) Last edited by squidgie : 08-11-2006 at 09:17 AM. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I found some Ocea pencil poppers here in sydney but they were $40AUS....so I might wait a while before getting one of those. Have you had much luck with the Saurus lures? I dont fish off the high cliffs at all. Im not too keen on trying to fight fish from up high. The spots I fish are no more than 2-3 metres above water level so you can use a gaff or wash them up,or jump down lower if possible. But these spots have deep water right in front . For those that do fish high cliffs, they use cliff gaffs, a 3 pronged hook that is lowered on the end of a rope down the fishing line . It goes over the fish and then you pull up. (are we allowed to post links here? if not delete this line.... http://www.campbellsprotackle.com/st...ct.asp?ID=1348) Just received some more skipping poppers that I had orderd from the US on ebay...body is nice, but instead of split rings, they cut the eye of the treble and threaded it on so they didnt use any split rings.. I guess you get what you pay for so I will need to put split rings on and new trebles. cheers |

| Super Moderator | Interesting form of fishing there mate. Wished I could catch YT from the shore here! To be frank I've not been doing offshore topwater fishing for a while now... kinda miss the rush from seeing a GT blasting poppers! |
