Is it a MUST to have a high speed reel for popping??

    Hi everyone,

Is it a MUST to have a high speed reel for popping??
will there be any disadvantage if i use a low speed reel??
    myself already have a Z4500 & a yr08 SW10000PG.
wish to save some $$ if possible.

heard from other ppl that if use a low speed reel will result with birdnest
and will also cost the guides of the rod to dropoff.
    is it true??

    regards

absolutely not true. you just need to crank faster. anyway, chuggers do not need speed.

low speed reel user since 1999.

The only minor set back about using low speed reels is when the fish takes your popper before you can pick up all the slack in your line after a cast. Other than that, it best if you are using a longer and softer rod with low speed reels. I've tried low gear reels with stiff broomsticks and its hard to keep proper line tension. If your fish isn't hooked good and proper the hook might drop off if there's slack in your line.

Not a MUST obviously but I think it will make the whole popping thing easier...ChrisT and I share the same sentiments that it's tough to pick up slack line quick enough with low speed gear ratios

oh for casting practice you better check with the "on-the-ball" popping fanatics... I'm getting far too lazy for these physical stuff

Haven't yanked on the DJ before so I can't tell you if the reels you have will go well with it. As a rough guide if your rod can load nicely with a Yo Zuri Surface Bull GT it should be pretty whippy and should work well with slower reels. It was a nightmare to fish with my Smith WRC80P/45 and Stella 16000PG many years ago so you might want to avoid these mistakes

Bro, for casting practice please check with Ah Gu or Kasier Fishing...we may have one coming up soon...can try all kinds of rods & poppers...usually held at seletar reservoir

The last one we had Carpenter UHL, EXH, 78H, TBL, WV, Komodo dragon, a Ripple Fisher and 4 x Ocean Revolutions! All can try out...

Can try diff poppers also...craftbait gt2, 3, realbait, cuberas/heru lures, orions big foot, conon cono, flapper, big jim, big arse lpb special big jim, gt monster, hammerhead I -cup watermelon, carpenter sed flog, abasa, gt gamma also have!!...next round I will bring the Irabucha popper i got from stickbom...after watching the Konishi techniques video I wanna try this one out with a different retrieve pattern

I have a DJ83ml which was paired with a 10000XG during my last trip...action of the DJ like those old style GT rods, whippy like the red/white tenryu kind...it's ok but i think a dj83mh would be a nicer stick if u really need a DJ...i prefer the action of the SP series and the ocean revolutions...83ml can pair with a bigger reel also...

As MarkR said, its hard retrieving the slack line with a PG reel. You'll probably get away with chuggers but I've seen so many times when a popper lands on the water and its engulfed by a GT. Ideally a HG would be best.

As for casting practise, I'll try to make it for the next round - wanna try my SP75EXf-gH - see if it can cast - might bring it for the next trip
