Re: Maldives gear

No guru here still newbie. I used the MIC Ryobi Safari at Maldives - as good as the MIJ reel IMHO. Need to flush spool throughly with fresh water after each use though.

Banax GT 5000 as alternative to the Safari.

Re: Maldives gear

Hi GT,

Now that you said it, it does look like a Saltiga doesn't it hahaha!

But it is actually a korean reel modelled internally much after the old Penn SS series but with infinite anti reverse. Robust and very affordable.

Try 2000Tackle at Pasir Ris Pond.

Re: Maldives gear

Hi,
I know several people who have fished the Maldives, make sure you use a long rod (8-8'6"). Many times long casts are needed to reach the reefs.

Check this link out ::PR-LABS/GT Popper:: .

I used Predators' pop masters, razors and dracos in Maldives .... along with some other pencils and chuggers (don't know what brand). All worked well .

Re: Maldives gear

Certain models of the Predator evolution poppers are available at 2000Tackle where I got them.

I think for slightly more than 1k SGD, you can look at HOTS Gipang 83H pair with Daiwa Catalina 4500H or Twinpower 8000HG, for a PE4 setup.

For PE6 or above setup I think for reel, you may want to try out the new Shimano Saragosa Series size 14000 or 18000. As for rod I would still recommend a HOTS Gipang 79XH.

I am also looking out for a not so expensive popping setup as there would be little use for the set, as there are not so much grounds for me to do popping.

You can also try to use a Shino or Lemax popping rod, nothing wrong with them except it is more heavier, that is IMHO. Shimano Kaibutsu could be another option as well.
