Long Popping rods- UFM Power Plus GT-112H

Yo man... this baby will REALLY shoot that popper of yours from Sentosa to Batam :P Amazingly, the once "talk of the town" rod isn't fetching that high a price in Japan these days (Current bid on Yahoo Auction- 20,500yen). Anyone wants one :P

Finally managed to test cast my Tenryu 9'6"er two weeks ago. Had 200m of PE5 (or was it PE6 ) on my 95' Stella 10000 and 100lb YGK leader. MAN, that Surface Bull GT REALLY flew Every cast hit the 100m mark and even a novice could achieve about 70m on his very first attempt.

I really have no regrets selling off all my "Broom sticks"... time to enjoy some laid back, relac jack style GT popping.

Mike,

Just notice, the rod is 11ft. Not bad leh can surf fish with it too but i don't quite fancy rods with male ferrule on the butt section.

Cheers!

Spigot ferrules are okay. My Tenryu, Saurus & CB-One has Spigot Ferrules. No problems so far (touch wood)

UFM? Can ask Deeper, sure he got a lot. Uncle John taking orders for UFM but total order has to meet or exceed 1 million yen.

Guys ,

Not sure but I think UFM has discontinued their GT rods production completely , I had a 83EH once but broke it at the butt joint where
the ferrule is inserted into the handle in Komodo when tussling with
a GT .

This rod is based on the " old " technology blank configuration , nowaday
the GT rod blank is made of so many dufferent configurations of layers of
graphite laminates which make them tend to be more durable under all sort of conditions and at the same time lighter .

What I mean all sort of conditions " are high sticking , twisting under load
and sudden surge of fish power , among other things that can happen during a tussle with strong fish .

Particularly for this long UFM rod , I heard it is not meant for PE line but I may be wrong here however at such length , it is better suited for targetting GT in the surf rather than from a boat .

Old rod no doubt... but it still works nevertheless. Pretty much depends on where you're fishing at actually. For long stretches of shallow reef or casting from shore, nothing can beat rods like the UFM. Did I mention you'll sweat a lot less trying to fling poppers with long rods? I'll go for short, beefy rods if I'm fishing near structure or targeting reeeeeally big GT. However, it may just be my lousy luck, but I find big fishes dun really come by so often so in order to enjoy/appreciate the sport, the use of lighter rods like the UFM is more practical (most of the time)

Opinions differ of course... so if I stepped on anyone's tail PLEASE forgive me

tried casting with Ulua series before, wow Jurong to changi.... no sweat!!!

Agreed with Stickbom that this is a great rod, yes old technology, but who cares as long as it works... unless the "furniture maker" also come out with long rod lor.... can cast & have lifting power, can take pe line, then say lah... haha

Agree with Stikbom as well, I think basic rod manufacturing technology has not changed much for quite a while, its just the rod length/actions and appearances that have changed, since Stikbom loves the feel and action of his rod, why bother whether its old or new school........especially when ufm rods are already of a very high standard in terms of technical know-how......

The older UFM rods used to be produced with a lot of gold sic guides. I used to have a dolphin stick and an underused 11 foot trevally special which I sold off to a UFM collector. Uncle John, the first tackle shop keeper to bring in UFMs to Sg had a couple of broken UFMs sent back to him too and this caused him some big headcahes. Personally, like Jon, I feel that UFMs are still a little old school in technology/design but they do have the old funky-retro feel that Stickbom! loves sooooo much

Guys ,

Modern blanks offer longer casting , broader casting weight and more backbone in wider circumstances but not many manufacturers make such a long rod in the market anymore , specifically for GT casting purposes , as the name of the rod in question implied .

A good rod in the past may not be such a good rod now and what is considered a good rod now may not be so good in the future , that is just the way it is not only with rod but with everything , except fishing catch results where a good old days is better , always .

If Mike is using this rod from the shore using lighter line class and medium sized lures , I guess this rod is still OK but a newer rods some 2' shorter may
achieve the same casting distance and yet offer stronger backbone , etc. and
can be used fishing from a small boat without the inconveniences associated with long rod .
