Fast action rods for popping..

Hi,

I was wondering if a fast action rod will be suitable for popping? I'm just toying with this carzy idea of converting an 7' under utilized rod into a popping rod. Any feedback is welcome. Thanks!

What blank is it? Rating?

Well, yonks ago, many people used to build Calstar GF700M into popping rods, for use in places like Maldives. Now this is a 20-50 class fast-actioned blank so I guess technically you can pop with something like that.

However, with the growing popularity of this form of fishing, and access to better (Japanese) tackle, I don't think many local anglers use 7ft popping rods anymore, athough there is a trend toward shorter rods nowadays, especially for the heavier applications. Most general purpose popping rods are around the 8ft range.

That being said, a well balanced 7ft popping outfit in the hands of a competent caster will out fling a longer but imbalanced outfit anyday.

It is a 20-50 lbs E-glass rod. A little on the heavy side but that don't seem to be an issue. After loading the rod, i'm pretty sure it can achieve good distance for poppers ranging from 100-150gms. If it is suitable, i intend to chop a feet or two and get another piece of blank to convert it to a butt-joint rod for easy transportation. What do you guys think of this idea?

Friday 29th looks good..since most of us are either from the east or central part, i suggest Haig Road hawker centre. Lots of good food..yummy.

Glass blanks casts well and actually "holds" your fish better when luring. That is why G.Loomis came out with the Crankbait series (slower action with more glass content) if I'm not mistaken. The only two concerns would be whether there's enough lifting power and the overall weight of your finished rod. A 20-50 glass stick would probably fish 30lb test comfortably so you can give it a try. Some very early Japanese popping rods are only 6'7" (Fisherman BG OCEAN H+2) and rated for 30lb nylon. These rods were soft and whippy, excellent for casting pencil poppers. FYI 30+kg GT's have been landed with these short/whippy sticks I have a 6'9" S-Glass blank sitting around at home too. If you're keen to try converting that glass blank of yours into a popping stick, I'll get mine built up too.

Onz lar... I'll get my S-Glass stick built up too Then fish as high drag as possible on 30lb nylon to thrash the rod. See how much abuse it can take.
