Cudas, don't use higher than 50lb braids and tie on a shock leader up front. The TSS4 should hold up pretty well if you use down to earth/logical drag settings.

Re: cheap popping reel

Yo fishfingers,
good to see you again..

Cudas,

pretty surprised that you've decided on TSS 4 over Twinpower 8000HG but its your call anyway.

but just for the sake of discussing Sub S$ 450 reel for popping we'll still carry on

personally i would rate Twinpower 8000HG higher then TSS and Spheros simply because it should picks up more line then the other 2, dunno how much line TSS 4 picks up every crank but at 106cm, (should be there as length taken from SW8k) 8000HG picks up as as much line as that of a Ryobi Safari 5000 and again between TSS4 and Spheros i would have go for Spheros because of its anti reverse, potentially stronger and smoother drag as well as the line laying (supposed to be braided friendly) you'll appreciate good line laying after a couple of cast and right after a big GT took a liking of your popper and not forgetting you should be able to have more line then TSS 4. like a friend once said, you might be able to survives with a low end popping rod but you hardly going to make it using a low end reel.. so choose wisely

then again, if you're popping with 30lbs mono then maybe it'll be a different story.

Cheers
Mark

P.s. hope we've just managed to confuse you further in your popping reel hunting

Hey Mark! How's it going? Ya. I'm now officially an armchair cyber angler liao! bo pian leh.........

If using TSS4, then might as well go full retro and pair it with an Ugly Stik Tiger and 30lb mono!

Daiwa also now has a budget jigging/popping reel right? I recall seeing it at Joe Tackle. Feels quite sturdy but damn heavy. Can't remember the name of it though. Does anyone know?

Hi FF,
The budget Daiwa Jigging/popping reel is named Opus Bull GT which is reputed to be the saltiga's cousin which can withstand 15kg drag. However, after checking it out at Joe's Tackle it does look sturdy and damn heavy but seems like it can't even surpass the reputation of the FreamsJ.
I've been cyber angling as well for sub S$300 budget jigging/popping reel that has more line/higher drag capability than the Freams4500J and seems like I'll go for the Spheros as per advise from the fishing guru's
here!
Anybody has hands-on experience with the Daiwa Opus Bull GT reel? Pls enlighten! Thks

Re: cheap popping reel

i agree with jason. after paying so much for such trip and u want to compromise on your gear? that is the last thing u want to do....and if the fish aint biting...all day long and suddenly u hook onto one but lose it...? i have been thrg that myself...so its aint jus talking rock here.

u dont have to get the best but at least get something that have been well tested. i would opt for twinpower myself if within budget.

Re: cheap popping reel

Was actually thinking that if you can target smaller fish and pelagic fish (open water) during your Maldives trip you should be fine with mono line of 30 or 40 lb. It's the big Gts that demand the extra heavy braided lines and maximum drag. If your ambition is to target big Gt you really should equip yourself with the right weapons. Light tackle popping however can be done with much more budget gear. Decent quality spinning rod with 25-30 lb line is totally capable of catching sailfish, big mahi 15kgs+, school yellowfin tuna, big skipjacks, wahoo and many other pelagics.
