Carpenter TBL 711/35 RF

Just got it last weekend after going to almost all the tackle shops in Beach Road and bent 10s of rods. I chose it because it's light and seems forgiving because it doesnt lift my feet up when it is bent. I am going to use it in Taiwan end of this month. Possible hook-ups using poppers at that place are dorados, dog tooth tunas and GTs. Last week someone hooked up a close to 50kg Dogtooth Tuna using poppers. My target is still GT. I know this rod is meant for sliders or gliders. I hope to get poppers lesser than 150g because I dont think I am physically fit enough for anything heavier. Is it hard to pop poppers or do i need another rod? Pairing it with '08 SW10000XG that I have just collected. The line bought for it is PE6. Is the setup ok for a beginner? Hope I can start this expensive hobby real slow. Pocket getting shallow but I dont mind empty it if this set up isn't suitable.

Re: Carpenter TBL 711/35 RF

TBL711/35RF is an ideal rod for beginner to intermediate angler , designed specifically for working stickbaits but can still handle poppers up to 125 gr. . I believe it is an ideal match for the new SW10000XG , myself haven't even seen this reel yet but my TBL711/35RF is paired mostly with either STL10000PG ( '98 model ) or SW8000HG ( '03 model ) using various line from PE5 ~ PE7 .

Good luck .

Jon .

a little off thread-

Jon, would you suggest using the XG for LR90? Or do I need a bigger reel?

Hi Zeck ,

We use LR86/LR88 with Z4500 n SW8000HG , was told by a source who has bought the new SW10000XG that in measurement , this new reel is approximately the same size of SW8000HG
( '03 modl ) but lighter in weight ( due to lack of twin drag ) .

Sportfisherman,

Handle poppers up to 125g means it's hard to cast or jerk?

I roughly weighted it with a scale and it's slightly more than 600g only. One thing I dont like besides the colour is the rubber knob. Both Tuna Max and Jigging Master knobs can't fit.

I will be going fishing tomorrow till Sunday but the spot is without top water predators except dorodo. So I may not bring that rod and reel to test. Will only test end of the month.

Hi ,

It's easy to cast but when jerked hard using big/heavy lures TBL711 tends to " absorb " the jerking power due to it's somewhat flexible tip .
