Rep Power: 0 ![]() | butt length of new shimano poppin rod my first impression of the long anticipated range of shimano poppin rods was that the handles are too long. the spec on paper are as follows: S7604 light Pleasure PE 2-4 100g max S8406 Pencil Instrument PE 4-6 150g max S8208 Long Cast PE 6-8 200g max S8012 Deep Monster PE 8-12 300g max S7812 Surface Monster PE 8-12 300g max a fren of mine happen to be holdin the Pencil and LongCast, so i took the measurements rear grip vs reel seat vs fore grip (cm) Pencil 50 15.5 23 Long Cast 51 15.5 26 Daiko STS-86 H 38.5 13.5 29.5 Daiko STS-962 H 41.5 13.5 29.5 i provided the measurements of the Daiko Southern Cross Stiks as a reference cus they are the rods i am using. can see that there is a drastic differences in measurements. but i believe i can easily fish both handle set up in relative comfort (must admit i am not very particular about such things). anyone care to input about handle length, up/down locking reel seat and gimbal postioning? |

| Senior Member | Re: butt length of new shimano poppin rod For comfortable casting , the bottom of the butt to where the position where the stem of the reel should approximately be one's shoulder width , assuming the stem position is in the middle of the reel seat then these new Shimano rods do have a longer butt grip and I wonder how low a gimbal belt one should wear to be comfy with them ? I guess we can always cut the butt grip shorter to suit our own physique and that is easier than trying to extend the butt grip if it's too short . Jon . The long butt section obviously is to give better leverage for casting as Mikey pointed out, but the business end of the fighting the fish will be compromised somewhat imho. As Jon mentioned, perhaps a low-slung gimbal belt like the Black Magic could be in order to get the right leverage for fighting a fish. I can also imagine the inconvenience of the butt getting caught on the shirt after each cast as you transfer it to the underarm for popping. Bringing it out of the underarm & into a gimbal belt would also be a nightmare until one gets used to the length. However, at that price, perhaps it is still a good deal and anglers can adapt their fishing style to suit the rod dynamics. Let's see the feedback as more of these rods go into actual use by anglers and not "field testers." Last edited by Makaira : 15-05-2007 at 09:33 AM. |

My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Re: butt length of new shimano poppin rod i have an Xtreme Tomahawk 2 popping rod and the 2nd half of the handle (from bottom of reelseat to gimbal) is measured at 48cm. i got no problem casting with that thou. one thing for sure, my shoulder width is wider than 48cm. not sure if its a good gauge to use shoulder width for consideration like jon has mentioned. but if i can choose, i would want my handle to be slightly shorter than 48cm. just slightly.
