Hi Fellas,

Personally I think it would be interesting to watch both Japanese and Taiwanese jiggers in action. The Taiwanese and Japanese have different styles, one of the main difference is in the choice of jigging tackle, overhead outfits vs spinning outfits. I don't think that the Japanese are better skilled than the Taiwanese, lots of tips to pick up from both these camps.

Drop by Fishing Buddy if you want some good videos of Taiwanese jiggers in action. Just bring a couple of blank VCDs and i'm sure they'll be happy to cut you some copies.

I can think of 3 must have videos:

1. Matustani's 104kg Dogtooth Tuna hunt in Nthn Mariana- long stroke spinning
2. Suzuki's 64kg Amberjack in Ogasawara- spiral short jerk spinning
3. Taiwanese 68kg Dogtooth Tuna in diao yu tai- high pitch short jerk overhead

But of course Stickbom! will say that the Charmas Saurus videos (circa 1900) rock lah

Commercial advert??!!?

Ya.. of course the Taiwanese are better... each time the Taiwanese 'jiggers' come back to shore, they have plenty of fishes to show for!!
The Japanese jiggers usually has nothing.

Hee hee!

Sure the Japanese release one or two smallies for the camera but did Suzuki release his big Amberjacks, did Matsutani release the big doggies? Almost every fish in the Chuuk video was gaffed. Suzuki's AJs were netted but look at the background and the boat deck.......muahahahahah....big, dead AJs lying around....

At least the Taiwanese don't try to be PC about it.

"One thing is that the echo sounder is spoilt on all 4 trips but majority of ppl got plentiful of fish because of hard work. If a person choose to sit and relax and Wana get fish then popping and Jigging is not the game for him."

Hmmm...I really can't imagine jigging for 5-6 days without the aid of a sounder, that would be murder for me.

You might be right... with your assumptions that Japanese ONLY releases ONE OR TWO smallies for the camera.... but hey, doesn't that beat fishing and keeping every single piece for MONEY?

I apologise if I am wrong, cause to think of it, we might not be talking about LEISURE SPORTSFISHING here.... haha... i'm a joke!

"People who keep the fish they catch are selfish", wise words from an FK consultant (2005)....hee hee

Yes, I disagree with the Taiwanese mindset of keeping and selling their entire catch.

Before I get accused of being a die hard taiwanese/jigging master/ag/fb supporter I must say that although I think they have some very good ideas and good things going for them I don't necessarily agree with everything they do.

Keeping the entire catch in Taiwan for sale is one of these things. I also feel that it's unnecessary to modify second/third generation Boss reels with the docking mechanism. As for J/M rods, I strongly believe that the new J/M 500g special is a good and versatile jig rod for jigs between 350g and 500g when using an OH set-up. On the other hand, I find the 400g a little too parabolic, I also don't understand why AG produces so many blanks either eg. 100g, 150g, 200g, 250g, 300g, 350g, 400g, 500g, 600g etc....a little puzzling indeed.

Nevertheless, I think we can pick up some good tips and tricks for deep jigging from both the Taiwanese and Japanese.

Tight lines

I have personally jigged with both AG Liu and Mogi San on different trips at the same location. Both camps use different gear, different jigs and different jig style but both targeting the same big Yellowtail Kingfish in NZ. The one commonality is that the rods tend to be short - 5' to 5'4". On my trip with AG, Mr Liu easily outfished anyone else from his group and I rate him as the best jigger I have had the pleasure to fish with. Don't get me wrong, Mogi and his friends Konishi & Okada are also very talented jiggers too but I think Mr Liu had the edge on them all!
