    Seven Seas Hooker 1

    Hi Mikey,

Note that you've had success with the hooker, just got some and need some advice.

Is there a preferred way to work this jig? Long jerk? Will Taiwan style high pitch short jerk with an overhead reel produce an ok action for this jig? The seves seas vids show the overhead guys using the long jerk technique as well so just wondering...

    Thanks

Hi Mark, Hookers flutter on the drop so you will need to let it sink a little to get the best action. This is why we do a sink and draw style.

By the way, Im not sure what HIGH PITCH SHORT JERK means Sounds like something from the Karma Sutra

    Hi Mikey,

I guess there are many different jigging styles and names for these styles but here is the high pitch short jerk method from setsuo's website:

    http://www002.upp.so-net.ne.jp/Ham/pescare/tactacs.html

I find this method much easier for heavy jigs (375g upwards) with an overhead outfit underarm...can't do the one jerk one crank thing with heavy jigs using a spinner while keeping the rod vertical, can't get the balance and rhythm, pretty tiring too...on the other hand the long jerk method is definitely much easier with a spinner outfit for both heavy n light jigs.

I know some jiggers with spinning outfits do a side jerk when using heavy jigs, seems easier than trying to keep the rod vertical and most people whom i've seen jigging underarm with spinners do something that appears to be in between the high pitch short jerk and long jerk method ie. one side jerk and 2 or 3 cranks.

Recently however saw a jigger with a very interesting style. Rapid short jerks and half cranks with a long spinning outfit (about 6 foot rod length), rod (think it was a monster cc) was in the belt and rod tip kept high at all times about 10-12 o'clock rod tip movement, guy was using a heavy 600g short profile jig...pretty effective...make any sense

Now thinking that getting a longer jigging rod (6 foot or so) for my spinner set up would be good a idea.

    tight lines

    Hi MarkR
I still prefer the Mad Dog Fxxking style of jigging.....Hahahahhahahaaha!!!!
Still cant get the rhythm of the under arm one crank one jerk jigging style.......
I will prefer a overhead for heavy jigging....(Maybe not used to spinning reels for jigging)

    Cheers
    Jason

Dun really see the relation between Hooker 1 and spin gear/500g jigs but NO, I did not have any problems with heavier jigs on spin gear. FYI I've used jigs up to 30oz on my Stella SW20000PG.

Its all personal preference. MarkR can work the overhead like a pro... and find himself fumbling with the spinner... just like a few of my friends. Doubt you can find the answer here... IMHO just go out and try which style suits yourself better.
