Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Ripple Fisher 5215 and Valley Hill Gday guys, I live in Australia and am looking to buy a high end jigging rod for Samson Fish, Yellowfin Tuna and Kingfish using PE6/8. I specifically have been looking at a the Ripple Fisher range as well as the Valley Hill range by Mogi. In particular I was trying to gain some information on these rods - Ripple Fisher 5215 Jig Valley Hill EXP-53XS - The Deep Quaker II Has anyone used either of these rods and if so what do you think of them? I also considered a Carpenter OH56MHS but I believe Carpenter is best in its popping range and the jigging rods are quite stiff and unforgiving. If you wish to recommend other rods besides these ones feel free to. Thanks D. |

| Senior Member | Re: Ripple Fisher 5215 and Valley Hill I used to own a Ripple fisher yaku sp and decide to let it go since its too soft for fighting big mama's. I own a 5220 and frm its spec it has passed over 30kg of lifting power. If im not mistaken, the 5215 can hold up to 25kg of drag or lifting power. As for the carpenter, the OH55-XH will be stiffer compared to the OH56-MH series but both rods only predict maximum drag of 18kg. I have tried both rods and i believe to fight a monster, the tougher it is the better chance you have to land it. If you want something which is quite reasonable in weight and in power, go for the ripple 5210 Quote:

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: Ripple Fisher 5215 and Valley Hill Thanks guys. I think I like the 5215 as a 'medium' between the 5220 and the 5210. It seems like a very nice all round rod. I also meant to compare it to the Carpenter OH55XHS. I am pretty sure the Yaku is RF's softest rod in the tip as well. Akudou, having owned and used both the 5220 and the OH55XHS, which do you prefer? I found the Carpenter a bit stiff and unforgiving on the angler, it is very powerful but as I said I think it can be painful. Do you prefer jigging with the 5215? Anyone know anything about the Valley Hill either? D. |

| Senior Member | Re: Ripple Fisher 5215 and Valley Hill Well daniel, before i answer your questions.. i need to know the depth you are goin to jiggin at. It also depends on underwater current as you need suitable jigs as well to suit the conditions. The OH55-XHS is quite stiff but very nice action once u get a big strike. The carpenter is also one of the lightest jigging rod i have ever felt compared to my other rods. How tall and heavy are you by the way? No offense on the Yaku but if you are fishing out in the open sea, the yaku will be a good fighting rod as well. MY friend who owns a Yaku have landed Doggies over 80kg with that rod. As for the 5220, i like the backbone power on it as i like to jig for GTs near oil platform as we really need to force the fish before it heads under the platform full of pipes. In terms of needing to force mama GTs before they head to the platform, i would choose the 5220. But if you are just fishing out in the opensea, the carpenter would be my choice. So, if you want to fight a fish without any pain but strong enough i would have a few choices, 5210,5215,OH56MHS and the Yaku SP Heres my list of rods i used depending on where i fish: (BC rods): Customised Expert blank pe4-8, Custom J/M 350gm Pe3-6, Ripple Exploit Pe8 (BC reels): Kaikon 3000, Ishidai Z40, Ocea jigger 5000P (Spinning rods): Custom J/M 400gms PE4-8, J/M 500gms ltd PE4-8, Ripple 5220, Fisherman Monster PE9 (Spinning reels): Ofcos the Stellas SW20k and the 20kFA Well, there are still some more on my list but then these are my favourites setup when i head out to fish. As attached are the few rods that i have mention. Hope you dont make a wrong choice by just looking and judging at the pictures. Cheers and make your decision wisely. Quote:

| Senior Member | Re: Ripple Fisher 5215 and Valley Hill yes, its stiff and its not similar to the OH56MHS. The 5220 is meant for big game fish with high drag reels to stop them real quick and reel it up quickly. The OH56MHS is a good rod, nice action and softer compared to the 5220. If i could, i would wanna own both but then you cant have everything in this world unless you can afford to do so. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: Ripple Fisher 5215 and Valley Hill I also live in Australia and have the Ripple Fisher 5215. Also have the ocea blue rose.I fish off Sydney and with the way the currents and wind goes, nothing short of 300gm up jigs is good enough to stay on the mark where the fish area. With the Ripple Fisher I can jig these jigs all day without having any problems and tiring as much as other rods. The rod works these heavy jigs beautifully and you can feel the action right through. My ripple fisher 5215 is an o/h and i match it with a TN16N for fishing in Sydney but have a TN40N if I want to go out and catch samsons. When i first started doing this, got some crap from mates saying i mismatched the rod and reel... at the end of the trip, they were silent cos I was still jigging away and many had given up so there's the proof. I guess after all the experience of nearly weekly jigging trips with some great ones and some not so good ones, the only thing you have to ask yourself is whether each time you go out there, you want to fish hard or relax. The ripple fisher just makes your life easy - to me anyway |
