Kingfisher No 39- Takat Aji Aji Brunei

Managed to get hold of a copy of the latest Kingfisher magazine from JB and watched the Brunei Amberjack jigging video.

Great stuff man...one guy with a 870/JM combo kenna spooled on the first drop...very very decent sized Amberjacks and looks like loads of action too

Wondering if this was filmed on a private boat or commercial charter? Referring to the fiberglass boat and not Capt Fred's Apollo at the end of the video.

Re: Kingfisher No 39- Takat Aji Aji Brunei

MarkR,

I am waiting to get my hands on that video too.

Well, I understand that the boys from KF were taken out by a local private boater and angler who is VERY experienced with Brunei waters and knows the dropoff spots very well. In fact, he was the one to give us a tip on the area where we recced the dropoff prior to Mikey's August visit last year....

I heard that they had a lot of fun, so I guess I will just have to get that Kingfisher mag later if its arrived already. And Yes, they had some nice big Amberjacks to play with....

Regards,

Saimee

Yo DFM,

What struck me was that Ah Fatt (Kingfisher team member) was piloting the boat most of the time. There was another boat fishing next to the Kingfisher team...those guys got a big Amberjack too

Tight lines

Master Cheng,

I was in Singapore dude, anyway, I don't want any of this star business, better let Ah Meng & Kahar show their lovely faces...

Do you have a copy of the DVD, if there is no more stock of the Mag?....

MarkR,

Ah Fatt captains his own boat and he and his crew are very good as you can see. As for what spooled Ah Meng, I haven't seen the video, but if the fish run was dead fast, it could well have been a billfish or tuna species. If it was the classic Amberjack short power runs then it was Big Mama AJ... Huge grouper are also a possibility... the 870's capacity would also work against it if using PE8.

I understand that the big Amberjack Kahar caught weighed in pretty heavy but I am not sure if they got anything heavier than 25kg.

Anyway, can't wait to see the video.

Saimee

Re: Kingfisher No 39- Takat Aji Aji Brunei

Saimee,
Went there justnow magz. out of stock but they burn the dvd 4sale at $5 . The dvd reported Kahar Amberjack weight 24.7kg, Apollo trip weight 23kg.
I think six gill spooled ah meng, i was told from 130m depth fight till Furuno can't scan the bottom probably over 1500ft.

Re: Kingfisher No 39- Takat Aji Aji Brunei

Cheng dude,

The reason there were no more copies was bcos I got the last one... ...

Watched the DVD, it was really good, nice camera work and the editing was great. The other boat in the background is not Kahar's boat, but of course Kahar was on it. I think it was Hj Mohammad's boat.

Watching Ah Meng get spooled was painful, I understand how his arms must have felt after fighting without a harness for that amount of time. Given that the fish or submarine was caught on jig, at mid-depth (according to the narrator) and during the day around a bait ball, I reckon I'll stick to my earlier guesses, i.e. a big billfish or tuna... heck it could even have been a foul hooked manta-ray.

Its a shame Ah Meng was not using a heavier outfit, he might have had a better chance. I also note that for all of the fight, the drag lever seemed to be at "strike" but then as it was a modified reel, that lever position that could well have been full drag anyway.

In any case, it sure was fun to watch my home waters entertaining some visiting anglers.

Arowana dude,

I have no idea when the next jigging trip will be. Weather and free time are so unpredictable these days. My crew have been pestering me to head out though, so we shall see how things pan out.

Saimee

Saimee,

He often say Brunei water PE#5 more than enough, no need to bring his 20k sw and Fa.

btw, any of your kakis caught Dogtooth Tuna b4? since 3-4 years ago i landed a 1.5kg at dropoff till now no more Dogtooth Tuna news, not even at payaw.
