My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Jigging Rod Rating Hello, I started learning jigging about 6 months ago but still can not get the correct jigging gear because of a lot of confusions. Need the gentlemens here to help for solving my doubts. Q1) I got a jigging rod with lure max weight 250g so does it mean that I can only use jigs not more than 250g ? I have seen some friends using same jigging rod but they jigging with 300g still able to catch fish. Q2) My jigging rod got a max load rating of 8kg so does it mean if I am using 10kg drag the rod will break ? One freind using Genesis PE4-7 (max load 12kg)with 15kg drag during his perth trip but the rod came back perfectly with no breakage. Thank you ! |

A1) 250g might be the optimal jig weight for your rod but depending on the fishing depth, line thickness as well as your jig profile, as all play a big part in the selection of jigs. so 250g rated rod may work reasonably well even for jigs heavier then 300g depending on the above reasons.. A2) again its a matter of optimal rating against max rating.. most rod due to their blank construction are able to take slightly more then the rated drag and alot of blank are rated alot lower then what it actually can take but in order not to over stress your rod its still safer to fish within the rod rate.. so ultimately its still, don't bother too much abt your tackle untill you are out there having a big fish at the end of your line fighting like no tomorrow..then it might be the time you should start to worry abt your tackles.. Till then.. Cheers Mark

My Mood: Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Hello mark, Your advice is very much appreciated which enlightened me a lot. My current jigging setup is tenyru Pe3-5 paired with twinpower 8000 which has 15kg max drag but the rod max load is only 8kg so will the rod break if i set the reel drag more than 10kg ? Thank you. |

| Senior Member | yours a JZ 571 S7? nice rod..used to own one too.. i haven't had a chance to max out that rod when i still own it, but had a friend whom match it with a Z4500. he was fishing in some very deep waters and happen to drop jig to abt 300m by then his line was totally used up and had to fully lock up his drag and crank slow hopping that no fish takes a liking for his jig, cos he simply stand no chances even if the fish makes a 10m dive but try as he did, he was hit on the way up and had to fight the fish on full drag all the way to the top.. not giving a single inch..can't remember what fish was it but remember it was in a range between 7-8kg or so.. Cheers Mark

Not exactly sure what you were trying to say, but here's another point of view because IMHO, when you have a big fish at the end of your line fighting like there is no tomorrow; then you start worrying about your tackle, it's a little too late. IMHO, I think anglers should go to "battle", so to speak, fully confident of the tackle they use, be it the rod, reel, line, leaders, hooks, knots, etc. because once you have doubts or worries about any single component of the process, anglers cannot "whoop the fishes ass" in good order. Make the right choice in your tackle & use it to the limit if need be to bring your quarry to the boat. That's where the fun is If you start worrying about whether the rod can take the stress or will it snap, will the drag cease, can the leader take the abrasion, the fun become stress instead Just some mindless ramblings on a boring Friday morning Best regards, Makaira | |

Rep Power: 4 ![]() | Hi eeyore, in Bali if you're far enough from the shoreline, your line couldn't reach to the bottom. The leader just snapped away, right in the knot (with swivel)...... rgds, Lod. |
