| Jigging questions, Sorry if what i am gonna ask was already discussed, i just couldnt find what i was looking for... I recently watched jigging video clip from angler pro shop (if i am not mistaken), it shows that the "movie star" wind the reel handle so fast while jigging the rod up and down. And its well known that using low geared reel is preferable for jigging, then why dont we use higher speed reel and we dont need to work that hard to reel the jig in. Has anyone tried jigging with a high speed reel like 10k stella? Results? Cus i am just thinking if we can use high speed reel for jigging and popping, it would be money safer eh? Just buy the rod! 1 reel for all! |

| Administrator | It could be the high speed reel does not have as much cranking power when doing deep jigging compare with low speed reel. Cheers, Edy |

| Moderator | Winding fast a low gear ratio reels doesnt mean you are moving the jigs fast but you are winding fast enough just to keep the jig moving thru the water column. |

| Moderator | I reckon you can use one reel for both applications i.e. jig & pop and it goes both ways, i.e. a lower reel can be used to pop (but wind faster) whereas a higher speed reel will work on jigs too. But to be comfortable in both disciplines, it would be ideal to get one of each type of reel. For jigging this especially applies where you have to jig for long periods with 350g and heavier jigs. If you get right down to the technical side of jigging, you would also have to take into account the jig design and the rod action to achieve the intended jig action. I reckon the same principles apply to pop and big swimbait applications. However, being only a recent entrant into the lure side of things, I am sure that there are guys with a lot more experience (Mikey, Narc, etc) who could chime in on this one. Regards, Saimee

| Super Moderator | You don't need to jig like a mad man to catch fish. Also, do note that the "movie star" was using a pretty small jig in the video. I doubt even Arnie can jig so fast once that jig goes pass the magical 300g mark IMHO a lower speed reel is the way to go if you want to use it for both popping and jigging. |

| Thanks for the enlightment, i thought the same way as stickbom, high speed reel tends to have narrow use as it is quite limited in fishing that requires high speed gear. As for lower gear it is wider use you can use it for almost any fishing technique, bottom fishing, popping(just need to wind it faster, you'll get tired but it does the job hehehe), jigging, livebaiting (for bait runner series) fishing is a costly hobby and if i could use 1 reel for 2 applications, it helps alot. Sure we can always get cheaper reel but how bout the quality? I dont wanna keep buying reel every year. Stella and saltiga are proven tough, they are expensive but they will last years. But buying 2 stella, whoa...wife may murder me hehe |

| Senior Member | JiggyJiggy . Buy 1 reel + 1 sparespool , for deepwater jigging you need thin but strong line to minimise the current effects so the jig can reach the bottom quicker , in popping you need slightly thicker line to have a little more abrasion resistance although a longer leader may be the answer still .
