Jig weight

Guys, has anyone here tried using jigs heavier than the max lure weight on a jig rod? I'm eyeing a jigging rod but the lure weight is only 6oz. That's about 50g short of the 200g jig I'm planing to use. Logic tells me rod makers usually don't rate their products to the max so it should be fine but just thought it would be useful to hear the input from the other Jiggernauts here.

Mikey ,

One I received complaint from somebody who fish in Bali among the strong current , he was using 500 gr. jig on OH56MH-S which is rated 250 - 700 r. in 100+ m deep , the rod was " saturated " and can't work the jig much .

I made enquiry to Kenji-san and he explain that effects of current onto the jig and onto that much line in the water are counted as " jig weight " too so
for such situation , he recommended OH55XH-S .

Not many places have current like Bali and as you know Sape Strait is almost impossible to jig due to extremely strong current so I guess manufacturers may not take into account these external loads , I guess perhaps it is better to choose something with a little more beef rather than not having enough .

I am not a jiggernaut but just relating what I received from other jiggernauts on Carpenter rods .

hahahaha... thanks for reminding me how hard I had to work @ Bali Jon. 520g jig with 300m of line out and still going... even if Konishi-San created a 50XXXH wouldn't help man. There's limitations to jigging tackle... no matter who made it or what its made of. I'm just thinking of using slightly heavier jigs in optimum conditions, low wind/weak currents. Think it should be fine. Well I could swap the lighter outfit for my CB ONE if conditions aren't going right for me. Thanks for the input anyway

Hi Mikey,

The JM 400g can handle 500g jigs in strong current (2 to 3 knots) + deep water (180 to 200m) fairly well. I'm not surprised that the OH55MHS was not up to the task with 500g jigs. I used to own a OH55XHS and found this rod a little too soft for heavy jigs and deep water work, the max 700g rating on the OH55MHS left me puzzled as well. I guess whether or not a jig rod can be used with jigs over the recommended weight will to a large extent depend on the rod pedigree/manufacturer.

Cheers
