Less tangles with the leader? Or do you pre-rig each jig with the hook? Wouldn't be the splitring possibly be the weak link in your connection of choice? Enquiring minds want to know ![]() |

| Super Moderator | Re: Jig rigging Mak, I've tried tying my leader direct to the solid ring on my assist hook but somehow the hook doesn't sit parallel my jig. Just don't feel comfy with the assist hook sticking out perpendicular to my jig. Also, if you're using quality split rings (that isn't deformed) and broader surfaced solid rings like those by Owner and Shout, chances of the solid ring working its way out from the solid ring is very low.

Oic ............ correct me if I am mistaken, for the assist hook to be sticking out perpendicular to the jig if you tied direct to the solid ring, wouldn't the assist hook have to be very short or made from very stiff material? Just thinking out loud ........... if having your assist hook parallel to the jig body is such a concern, wouldn't using a good three-way swivel achieve the same result? Actually, come to think of it, having the assist hook sticking perpendicular to the jig may even increase the chances of a solid hookup without the jig body getting in the way With regard to the solid ring working itself out of the splitring, imho, the chances of that happening is much lower than a split ring "opening up" under heavy drag. Good luck on your BB trip!!!!! Last edited by Makaira : 12-12-2007 at 08:59 AM.

Good weather is the key in these long range trips. Everything else is luck! Imho, having a hook sticking out; albeit perpendicular to the mainline, has a better chance of a solid hookup than a hook folded against the lure body. For example, when rigging my trolling skirts, I make sure the gap of the leading hook comfortably clears the lure head. I believe the same applies to jigs i.e. hook gap should be wider than the widest part of the jig. Most fish hook themselves if they strike the lure at the correct angle. Striking is just to ensure the hook sinks in nice & deep beyond the barb. Good opportunity to try it both ways on your coming trip to see if there is indeed a difference.

| Super Moderator | Re: Jig rigging I'll try and convince a buddy of mine to tie his leader direct to the assist hook's solid ring. We'll compare results and report back in a weeks time
