Chris, there's no restrictions on reelseats. Personally I will not use an Aftco UNLESS the reel is huge and comes with seat clamps. This is because metal reelseat lock rings have an habit of loosening so unless you are clamping the reel down, I think it's pretty risky. Graphite reelseats on the other hand are great with small to medium sized reels because you don't need to clamp them down and the drag settings involved aren't as scary.

Oh yeah... dun try to clamp reels on graphite reelseats... it'll most probably damage it.

why i asked this question becos i have a calstar 760L build for heavy bottom fishing. i am using the aluminum seat cos im pairing it with penn 16s. tot i could buy a boss665narrow n pair my 760L for jigging use. so i guess that it shouldnt be a big problem after all.

seen alot of people using reel clamp on plastic trigger handle. was wonder if the plastic wont crack if overtighten.

once again...Thanks mike!

Cheers,

the loosening of the reelseat rings is more due to vibration cause when the rod is resting in the rod holder with its reel on, actual fishing will not lossen the rings of course you can also just have a rubber ring or any form of adhesive tape bound over it to prevent it from lossening.

cheers

Mark, I'm not sure if you noticed this but metal reelseats have grooves which does not properly fit most reels on the market. Yes the reel foot will go in but the grooves are usually too big and your reel will shift sideways when cranking. This side movement will loosen the lock ring too. Trust me dude... my earliest custom jig sticks used metal reelseats. The remedy you mentioned should work well cos I've seen ppl doing it before.

Chris, Penn game reels should fit metal reelseats nicely. It's the Japanese reels which will face problems mentioned above.

Hi Chris,

Shouldn't be a problem as the 665N comes with a reel clamp. Having said that, it depends on the size of the reel seat used. Size 2 & 1 no problems at all. If the blank you are using has a very thick butt & you need a size 3, you have to make sure the reel clamp studs are long enough otherwise the nuts will not catch the thread.

As far as metal reelseats are concerned, fit will always be a problem one way or another, with or without reel clamps. One way to alleviate this problem is to use a rubber spacer or gasket. This can me made cheaply by cutting some old bicycle tyre inner tube into 2 inch sections. Let me illustrate what I mean.

For heavier rods like the GF755XH which I use the Accurate 50W or Penn International 50SW with the Interclamp reel clamps or even the GF760L for use with 30lb class game reels; because these hybrid blanks have pretty slim butts, I use number 2 Aftco or Perfection reelseats. What happens is there will be a gap from the reel clamp to the reel seat even when screwed down totally & therefore the clamp does not hold the reel in place. One solution is to shorten the reel studs, but once you do that , it is permanent & if you happen to have rods that use say a number 3 reel seat, the studs may be too short. So what I do is to place the 2" piece of inner tube rubber on the reelseat then screw down the clamp. Voila!!! The rubber also acts as a shock absorber & takes the rattle in the rod holder & the screws will not undo themselves as easily over the course fo the trip. It also protects the reelseat from scratches too!

In cases where the reelseat is too large for the reel foot, you can place the rubber spacer on the reelseat, then place the reel foot on it so the fit is tighter.

I hope you can visualize what I have written

Best regards,
Makaira
