Treble Hooks

Hi All,

Any suggestions for make/brand of treble hooks for trolling use?
My lure size is about 190mm in length.
Doesnt seem to have much options...
Owner and Mustad seems more readily aviailable in shops.

Thanks all in advance!

Cheers!

You can also try Decoy or Gamakatsu. Both of these brands should be available at AO. The important thing is to match as close as possible the size of the stock hooks on your lure so the replacement hooks do not affect the swimming action of the plug.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes, good things don't come cheap, but sometimes, cheap things are good enough.

When it comes to terminal tackle, I always try to get the best there is. Afterall, how many times do we get to go fishing in good spots. To lose a good fish due to terminal tackle failure should be a cardinal sin!!!

Re: Treble Hooks

Traditionally we used a lot of Mustad 9430 when we needed to change treble hooks. They won't be as strong as the xxx strong Japan hooks but should be strong enough for most fish. For a 190mm lure you could also use larger size trebles which will be stronger. Some swimming plugs will also swim with double hooks (mustad 7982).

Mustad 3565B is also fairly strong. One good thing about the mustads is that they can be resharpened quite easily. I find the Gamakatsu and Owner single hooks need careful rigging otherwise they go blunt quite fast when trolled and are difficult to resharpen properly. Don't know whether this is true of the treble hooks but something to watch out for, just in case.

Hi Patudo,

The original trebles which comes with the 190mm lure is about size 2/0.
I tried to match the lure with size 3/0 which seems way too big, afraid it might affect the swimming pattern of the lure.
I do agree the bigger size trebles will be stronger though.

Cheers!

For top water popper i do agreed that by changing to diff size of treble hook may affect the action of the popper as for trolling lure bigger treble hook does't seem really got great impact on the lure action as i personally tried before still able to land fish.

More interesting to note is that saw a lot of malaysian angler changed to single hook for all their trolling lure during my Spratly trip a few years back but they still managed to land fish after fish

Hi eeyore,

If were to use single hook for trolling, any suggested type of hooks to use for that matter?

Cheers!

Re: Treble Hooks

Try the lure with the bigger trebles compared to another lure with the standard hooks and see whether the action is different at trolling speed. If there is no difference, great. If the bigger hooks make the lure too sluggish, try the 3/0 as the belly hook and a 2/0 as the tail hook.

The Bonita style lures can be used with single hooks but personally I have trouble getting a rapala to swim properly with singles.

Re: Treble Hooks

Hi th2x,

i can not really recalled the type of single hook those anglers used during my spratly trip but if i am not wrong should be owner live bait hook and the setup is exactly the same as what stingrray photo shown, i.e. with ball bearing.

stingrray, tq for the clear and beautiful photo of the bonitor trolling lure

Hi bro stingrray,

I used the Halco Laser Pro.
See attached problem...Painful lesson learnt...Noticed the rear treble hook?

By the way, as for trolling the Yo-zuri Bonita Lure, how do you gauge the depth that the lure is tracking? It seems to me that the this type of lure will continue to dive all the time. Worry if release too much line, it will snag onto the sea bed and the result will be unthinkable. I have a similar lure from Williamson(Cant remember the name though) but have yet to try trolling it though.

Cheers!

Yo bro, confirm U never go the website read... Okay, below is the exact extract from Yozuri website...

================================================== =========================
The Bonita has a Poly Balsa urethane construction for unbelievable durability, and super-sharp, corrosion resistant salt water double hooks or single hooks with ball bearing swivels.
These are properly balanced for super swimming action, and come in vivid colors and patterns

Diving depths are from 6 to 8 feet.

Yo bro, my guess is... should be around the dive depths of yozuri bonita bah... btw, regarding trebles

* Gamagatsu (spell) is the most expensive. Retail S$80 odd for a packet of around 10pcs bah... can't recall liao. Saw from AO.
* Decoy is the 2nd most expensive. Retail S$34 like that for 8pcs. Can be found in AO.
* Owner is the cheapest. Retail around S$8.00 plus for 4-6pcs... can't recall. Saw from Sabre.

Good luck in your hunt

cheers,
stingrray
