Rep Power: 5 ![]() | A "topless" reel is designed specifically to cater to the US west coast long range market for fishing live baits targeting YellowFin Tuna. They like it topless because it allows them to take in line with their fingers "walking" on the spool to keep in contact with the bait by keeping the line taut. This is often done with the reel in freespool and ratchet off. Those who have seen videos on long range tuna fishing will know what I mean. Without the top bar, it will also helps in casting baits out as it allows for easier thumbing of the spool to prevent overuns. Clearing of the inevitable birdnests is also much easier. For me, I am fine with that extra piece across the frame for for greater structural rigidity especially when fishing very high drags. Having said that, since most of these reels are machined from solid block marine grade aluminium, I am sure the topless frames are just as strong. Being a topless reel doesn't mean that if you do not lay your line properly on the retrieve & a mountain forms, the spool will not get "stuck" as the other cross bars will still catch it. The Avet seems to have taken a book out of the super expensive Daiwa SLT in terms of frame design. Unless it is an optical illusion, the cross bar closer to the reel seat appear to be "convex" rather than just straight. This will allow for more spool clearance & therefore less chances of having the line rubbing on the frame in the event a mountain of line forms. In the case of the Daiwa, the reel is more bulbous in shape as all the cross bars are cut curved instead of just the underside curving away from the spool; as is the case for the non-topless Avet. |
