Tiagra 50 - Help...

Hi all gurus,

Need some help. I have a tiagra 50 reel with 80lbs line. At what drag setting should I pre-set the reel at strike? Is the fomulate as below or should I set more? I'm going to target fish like great hammerhead or 6-gills...

80lbs divided by 3 divided by 2.2 equals 12kg at strike?

Understand I might get reply likes let set the drag your body can take it. Pls take this factor away. I just want to know what's the recomand drag to set for tiagra 50 reel with 80lbs line. Thanks...

cheers,
stingrray

Re: Tiagra 50 - Help...

For game fishing, I would recommend having around 25 lbs strike drag at the button (strike position) for a 50 reel spooled with 80 lb line. Full drag will be approximately 10-12 lbs more, around 35-36 lbs.

I use a piece of tape on the right hand side of my reel marked with drag settings from free-spool to full drag. Set the 25 lbs drag at the button with a scale, mark it down as 25, then find out the drag settings all the way down to free spool. The numbers marked down (use a waterproof marker pen to write on the tape) should look similar to this:

36 - (full drag)
33
30
28
25 - (strike drag)
23
20
18
15
12
10
8
6
- (free spool)

When fishing, use the drag numbers as a reference. For instance, for trolling for marlin with medium lures, I would troll at maybe 8 to 12 lbs for the bite, but increase the drag to between 15 and 18 lbs to set the hook. During the fight, I can tell my angler to increase the drag to 20 lbs, 25 lbs or however much drag is needed to win the fight, but at the same time I can tell him to reduce the drag to precisely the correct amount of drag if the fish decides to run. Marking the drag like this is one of the best tips I've ever come across.
