the guy was 'spooled' so why would he needs to wind back the lines???? it should instead be - the school of YellowFin Tunas should have enough dental floss to last them a life time...

wondering how does the drag feels now after being spooled!

Hi guys,

I would like to pose a question for discussion. If this was to happen to you i.e. line smoking away & you know that there is no chance of stopping the freight train & risk getting totally spooled, what would you do?

1. Let the bugger take the line to the end & PIAK!!!!!
2. Push to sunset and/or jam the spool with the hand to turn the fish or break it off

Personally, I would do option 2. I don't want to let hundreds of meters of line left in the open waters to potentially do damage / kill indiscriminately. It may well break off at a weak point in the mainline that still leaves a few hundred meters of line out in the sea, but at least not the entire spool. Just my humble opinion. What do you guys think?

I have only been spooled once in my life, not by a fish though, but a frigging bumboat that cut across the stern of the boat & caught the fishing line; & no one was paying attention until it was too late The rest of the time, the fish either turned, or the hooked pulled, break in the mainline or knot when full pressure was applied.

Best regards,
Makaira

yes option 2 is better.....also can maybe save most of the line back if U can break it at the leader or atleast one of the knots in the rig.

Option 2 all the way baby,

But would be careful with my thumbs... have been burnt before. I have never been spooled by a fish either, closest was about a quarter of the spool left.... a GT as I recall.

That looks to be a Torsa 30, I just wonder what drag cam he was running and whilst the spool is empty, it looks like there is still line on it...

Looks like fun either way... But Mak, how'd he know it was a YellowFin Tuna?....

Regards,

Saimee

With the use of braided lines these days, very often, anglers load their reel with lines that are beyond the specs of their rod & reel. As such, if you are jamming the reel to turn the fish or to break it off, I suggest you point the rod right at the fish so that the "PIAK" is the line; not the rod or some reel parts
