Bludder @ least you can test test at the shop before buying leh... I see Japanese anglers use so thought its good. When the reel arrive ah... a bit culture shock :P Best thing was, I bought 3... two #100 and one #300. Luckily VS very easy to sell on Ebay... ah boh siao liao I bought the Silver one recently cos its damn chio Also, a 100% waterproof reel can be quite handy at times... dun have to worry when you accidentally dunk the reel in saltwater while wading around on flats/bommies

Hi,

Not Sifu Mikey, but here's my take.

IMHO, the Van Staal series of reels are not really suitable for popping, then & now. Apart from the lack of a bail arm back then, it does not have a long cast spool, linelay ain't that great and I don't think the retrieve is fast enough for effective popping. Who knows, perhaps in the near future, they will launch a reel that caters to the popping crowd.

To be fair, the new generation VS are much smoother than the first ones I handled in the past. Be warned that if you are expecting "Japanese" smoothness & quietness in the reel, don't even touch the reel They are works of art, beautiful reels, well built & will do what it is supposed to do very well. However, if you get one for popping, IMHO, you will probably be very disappointed. Frankly, at that kind of $$$ outlay, you can't go wrong with the Saltiga or Stella for popping.

Opinions differ of course.

Best regards,

Makaira

P.S. Don't think Mikey has the VSB. In keeping with his current retro phase, as evidenced by his current obsession with Abu baitcasters, he has the VS100 I believe i.e. no bailarm.

Eh mai luan luan say "pro"... Field Marshall Makaira never declare he "pro" here no one dare to mention "pro" liao

No bail means you need to manually lift line out from bail using your fingers lor... after a while your "fingering" skills will get bery good One day IF we meet up at fishing pond I show you how to finger a Van Staal
