Not Sifu Mikey, but here's my take. IMHO, the Van Staal series of reels are not really suitable for popping, then & now. Apart from the lack of a bail arm back then, it does not have a long cast spool, linelay ain't that great and I don't think the retrieve is fast enough for effective popping. Who knows, perhaps in the near future, they will launch a reel that caters to the popping crowd. To be fair, the new generation VS are much smoother than the first ones I handled in the past. Be warned that if you are expecting "Japanese" smoothness & quietness in the reel, don't even touch the reel They are works of art, beautiful reels, well built & will do what it is supposed to do very well. However, if you get one for popping, IMHO, you will probably be very disappointed. Frankly, at that kind of $$$ outlay, you can't go wrong with the Saltiga or Stella for popping.Opinions differ of course. Best regards, Makaira P.S. Don't think Mikey has the VSB. In keeping with his current retro phase, as evidenced by his current obsession with Abu baitcasters, he has the VS100 I believe i.e. no bailarm. | |

All my VS has been bail-less versions. Me prefer the unique retro look  Aiyah... say go wading is just excuse lar.. I lazy to service reel so VS is a good choice.
