Question on Reel maintence

Hi all,
will be on a trip for at least 4 days out on the sea... we will be doing various activities, (although not all of them simultaneously!) trolling, jigging, popping and bottom bashing... would like to know... in between activities.. what should we do to the reels? The rod and reels will be left in the open in the rod stands until used, should we just dosh them with luke warm water after each activity and cover them with a damp cloth ? Or spray them with WD 40 ?

Any tips ?

cheers!

Hi rodbender,

You can, if you want, to do as you have suggested. Howver, imho, if you do that everyday after every use of your tackle, it is a waste of water, especially on a long range trip, unless the boat has a watermaker.

Imho, simply washing down the rod & reel at the end of the fishing day & storing in the cabin, if there is space & it doesn't inconvenience other anglers, will suffice. Otherwise, just leaving it in the open air in the rod racks is not a problem. The most inportant thing is the post-trip cleanup. Opinions differ of course.

Best regards,
Makaira

Re: Question on Reel maintence

You could wash off some of the rods/reels at the same time you are having a shower. Another way is to have a spray bottle with warm water mixed with a little soap. Spray the reels in the evening and dry them with a towel.
