PENN 550SSg

Just bought a new Penn 550SSg. Here's a few first impression comments-

Pros
1. Much lesser rotor wobble compared to older Spinfishers
2. Single direction drivetrain, like Safari/Saltiga
3. Graphite body feels sturdy even when cranking under stress
4. Sleeker/more contoured look compared to older SS series
5. Stronger bail spring = less premature bail closures
6. Attractive price! SGD$165
7. Still made in USA

Cons
1. Despite the anti reverse bearing, I can still feel a little rotor flex
2. Tiny drags- Should have used the same drag system as the Slammer!
3. No titanium nitrited bail arm roller
4. Main shaft looks relatively thin in diameter for a reel it's size

Upon closer inspection, I found that there was uneven, excess material on my reel foot caused by casting process. It was extremely uncomfortable on my fingers when gripping the reel. Had to remove the excess material with a file and smoothening it out with 400 grade sandpaper.

There was also a little too much play between the bail arm and rotor. Had to put a washer under the nut that secures bail arm to rotor.

Other than the two above mentioned, everything else seems alright.

Hi Stickbom,
Thanks for the review. I am interested to get one of this toy but I have some query hope you can assist me.
1) What is the drag like for 550ssg ?
2) Can this range be used for jigging or popping ?
3) What range should I get for 30lb to 50lb main line ?

Thanks mate .
Cheers

Hello Encik Dorado!

Saya dun think the SSg boleh tahan Popping/Jigging... UNLESS you are using 20lb line or less.

The largest SSg is 550. It's not meant for serious bluewater use. More to Inshore/light boat work.

30lb test = SS6500
40lb test = SS7500
50lb test = SS8500
60lb test = SS9500

Hope this helps.

Great help Stickbom, Thanks.
So I think either 6500ss or 7500ss is just right for me.

Cheers.

Bro someone selling 7500SS-> http://www.fishingkaki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8627

Penn spinners are very tough so it's quite safe to buy 2nd hand one
