New Quantum Offshore Reel

This is the latest & first offshore offering from Quantum.

Quantum Performance Tuned Fishing Tackle

The irony of it all, to me at least, is looking at the line cap numbers -- 20# / 30# / 50# -- why on earth would anyone want or need 48.5lb strike drag with a max of 60lbs If they are serious about their product really dishing out the stated drag speicifications, imho, they should provide line cap for 65# spectra & up instead of having people needing to figure it out by guesstimation through converting mono line diameter to braided line diameter or vice-versa

It sure looks like a Tiagra in different colour scheme at a glance though.

Imitation is the best form of flattery Mak.... Nice colour though...

Wonder how the drags stack up against the competition in terms of reliability..

Nowadays, imitation has become OEM. China of course.

All I can say is that it's real scary the way manufacturers are making claims like nobody's business these days to stay in the game. It has essentially turned into a numbers game. Can't really blame them though because many anglers these days seem to equate number of ball bearings, max drag numbers, deadweight lift numbers and what have you to perceived quality. While these numbers do play a part to some extent in determining quality of a piece of equipment, one must bear in mind that such numbers are but a part of a total equation.

The tool-less take down is interesting. Wonder what made Quantum adopt this feature? Marketing gimmick?

Very few game reels had or have this feature, the only game reels I can recall having a tool-less take down are the ABU Ambassadeur 20 & 30 that were produced in the late 70s & early 80s.

Re: New Quantum Offshore Reel

Been eyeing the smallest Aruba since it appeared at the American tackle expo sometime ago... but its kinda pricey! Would go nicely with my deadly Japo bottom cannon

It is pricey indeed considering it is the new kid on the block. For about 20% or so more (based on US prices), you can get the tried & tested Shimano Tiagra equivalent; or the Avet 30 which costs USD430 vs the Aruba 30 priced at USD405.

As for using such reels i.e. game reels, for bottom bashing, just be aware that you will end using the low gear to gain line on a fish most of the time simply because the relatively larger diameter of the spool; and the gearing for such reels, while very robust, requires a lot of torque to get it cranking when under pressure. Even pump & wind with short strokes can be a real chore on the high gear. Or maybe I simply never got the technique right. Upgrading the handles to the longer after market handles like the T-bar helps alot in that respect though.
