Re: Need Pointers...[tackle setup for ray]

I am okay to try with freshwater ray, in fact i know Ah Boy BKK quite well, he has told me about the mystery and power of the frashwater ray.

when are you going ?? give me a thinker, we see if we can fix something up.

Hi Frank7, I have no doubts in steven's advice. With his marble ray photos in his bedroom, I more everso wanted to catch one. On one past trip, I even did used the mentioned ang-ko-li bait but no take. On my lastest trip there... we did have many live/ dead ang-ko-li, somehow using this bait didn't cross my mind and I'm using frozen sotong instead. My mistake

Talking Re: Need Pointers...[tackle setup for ray]

Hahaha Frank,

Haha, you are 1 of the few that knew about that 80Kg and Z30 story.,,,,,,,,

but i think we share the same feeling abt our own Z30, In fact i like it so much i have it in 5 models, nice little bugger, my Z30 have followed me for the last 5-6 years and landed many fishes. the only time it got screwed, was by a 30Kg GT while bottom fishing in Natunas oil rig, drag lock down to the max, and the GT fish 1st run kinda cracked the side plate inside, had the interior change by AO.

Same office, call me if you are around, sometime me inside back office cleaning my fish tank.

what a waste !!! David !!! the top left lone ang go li looks so POTENTIAL to get you a mama ray !!!!!

and do you know that female ray fights more aggressive than male rays,,,,,,from personal experiences 6 X >50kg under my belt so far.

On Ah chai number 8 boat captained by Ah An.
same kind of set up and bait. lasted 45min - 1hr.

80kg Monster

This one is my pride, on Saltigal Z30 with new 65lbs line, (luckily new, if not sure burst), calstar 30-80lbs, single hook 8/0 thick shank with 100lbs leader, ang go li as bait. lock down drag including thumbing, lasted 3 hrs including gaffing. I nearly die of exhaustion after it was landed, 1 man show all the way. come to think of it, i woulden't have the physical now to handle this kinda fight. last giant ray so far, have not landed anymore giant ray since then.

So inspiring...

all this is already appro 3-4years ago, haven't got a chance to go tg. pinang since then.

Re: Need Pointers...[tackle setup for ray]

Hi Steven,

Thanks for your input. This Saturday (15 Mar), I'm going back to tanjong pinang again to seek out my dream. I'm arm with a Genesis Dogtooth Special PE3-5 rod pair with Accurate 270 reel loaded with 300m of 50lbs powerpro. Is 300lbs sufficient for the 1st/ 2nd/ 3rd run? As usual, night fishing I'll use 100lbs mono & 2pcs hook shown below.

Re: Need Pointers...[tackle setup for ray]

Steven, me chiong Tanjong Pinang later (15-17 Mar), haven't sleep yet. Just finished packing. I'll use ang-ko-li as bait if it's available. I've brought a heavier setup for the ray. The 270 also brought along but as backup only. Thanks for your advice.

cheers,
stingrray

Re: Need Pointers...[tackle setup for ray]

Just came back from tanjong pinang trip. Lost a pari estimate >30kg by boatman. Story goes like this... I'm sleeping in the bunk when boatman woke me up saying my setup hit a big pari. Me jump from bed and chiong outside. Was told 2 brown ray + 1 leopard(estimate 30kg) landed liao. Hanging on the other end of my setup is a pari already stuck to the seabed. I took over the rod from an exhaust angler (4 anglers already fight the fish). I only apply presure on the fish but totally no effect even if I bend my rod to C shape. Only hold for 30mins before the deckie came and decide to burst my line. As I can't just wait there indefinately for 1 pari to move it's ass and let all fellow anglers wait. I let the boatman handle the setup. They took out a handline spool, coil my braided around the spool afew times and pull till my braided burst. I lost a battle...

My setup :
* Calstar 760L 30-80lbs rod (6fts uncropped)
* Shimano Tiagra 12 spool with 300m of 65lbs dynabraided line (2nd defeat of tiagra 12 reel in tanjong pinang)
* Drag was preset by weighting scale to 8kg at strike. As fellow 4 anglers didn't quite know how to use my reel, they only max the drag till strike only when fighting the pari.
* 400lbs Rossco swivels with 175lbs owner snap
* 100lbs bite leader around 3 'siam'
* As I didn't bait the rig, therefore asked boatman what bait he use, he say he using frozen sotong.
* 2pcs mustad hooks

cheers,
stingrray
PS : May I ask, when pari stuck to seabed, how to make it move? Of course I understand it's best to crank up the pari before it get a chance to stick to the bottom. Kindly enlighten me... thanks

Paiseh didn't want to sidetalk too much in the knot thread. Hope U dun mind we continue our discussion in this ray thread The leader was very long. According to guide, the leader was 10men long & we took a boat out so the ray was just under our boat most of the time. I've to agree that the bend of the rod was nice. The rod not sure what brand as it's a custom rod with no spec. A g.loomis decay was stick onto the rod The reel is Shimano TLD30A 2speed reel. Line is 80lbs berkley line. It's not fireline nor whiplash. The leader is Jinkai.
