Need Advice on Jigging & Popping Rell/Rod Combination

Hi guys,
Please advice me on reel/rod combination for jigging and popping which I have narrowed down to following reel/rod combination.

I am planning to use my existing Penn International 975 for jigging to be paired with Genesis Jigshaft BX-58 + PE 30 lbs for jigging 80-200 gram jig size.

As for popping, I'm planning to use Shimano Spheros 14000FA with either Smith WRC-80P/35 or Zenaq Fokeeto P83-3 + PE 50 lbs for popping less than 150 gram popper size.

I figure out the choice of rod based on what other people in this forum recommend to be good value rods. However, I am not quite sure whether the reels above will match the rods. What do you guys think about the reel/rod combinations. Are the combinations technically correct? Is there any other reel/rod to be considered within the same price range?.

Please advice me on this matter. Thanks a lot for your help and I'd appreciate it.

Thanks stickbom!,
I have browsed through the forum about these tackles especially Smith and genesis rod. Your posts help me a lot (thanks for such valuable info). On the other, I'm not quite sure how well Penn 975 will work for jigging. Will I find it difficult to jig with Penn 975?

Also, which one do you recommend more for popping rod? is it Smith WRC-80P/35 or Zenag Fokeeto p83-3? I'm planning to use the rod not strictly to use for GT popping but also tuna and possibly sailfish. Which rod can accomodate such purposes?

Thanks a lot for your input and I'd really appreciate it.

Believe it or not, Japanese anglers actually use the humble ABU 5600/6600 for their light tackle jigging extensively. As long as your Penn holds sufficient line for your needs, it's fine. As for the Zenaq/Smith, both rods casts extremely well and you can use them for a wide variety of species.

Hi stickbom!,

Thanks for the links. I found that Penn 975 is suppossed to be able to hold more line than Abu 6000C3. Based on the link above, 6000C3 hold PE3 which I intend to use 400m or 0.40mm diameter line can be spooled for 200 meters. Penn 975 can spool 0.40mm diameter line up to 310 meters. So, IMO Penn 975 can spool 50% more line, don't you think so? do I calculate it wrong?

Thanks again.

This isn't a maths test bro... as long as you can squeeze the desired length of line onto that Penn it's fine.

Thanks bro!!!
Any idea which store carry Smith, Genesis and Zenaq? Angler's outfitter?
could you please give estimate of current price of WRC-80P/35, Zenaq P83-3, Jigshaft BX-58 and BX-57?
I am not sure also whether there is any sort of manufacturer warranty for japanese brands as compared to US brands.

stickbom! thanks for quick reply!!!

I have emailed AO a couple days ago but haven't got any reply yet, they might be closed for christmas. I reside in Australia but originally from Indonesia and soon will relocate back to Indonesia

Could you explain me what sort of warranty for Smith or Genesis rod is (Do these company have website so I can check their warranty detail)? How to claim should there be defect or broken rods?
This is because I just heard that currently some tackle stores in Indonesia just have above brands stocked and I'd like to compare the prices and warranty availability and claim procedure which might be different

Thanks a lot for your help, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Yo I'm pretty sure the guys at AO will reply soon. I've never bothered to claim for damaged rods before so you need to check with them on warranty issues... and most of my rods are imported from Japan so I can't help you in this area

I'll email them asking for warranty. Thanks though stickbom!

Sportfisherman, thanks for the info, however, I am still in Australia until march-April next year so I can not check the rod available for sell (too bad...I should take the opportunity ).

Chances are those rods would still be available since , fishing season won't start till March / April anyway so what is the hurry ? There will
be lots of new gears coming out in 2006 , especially in reels department .

Thanks sportfisherman for the info. You're right about why would be in hurry, in fact the fishing won't start until march or april. I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible so I'll be ready with sufficient gear but without flattening my wallet (All the money has gone for my education)
So, definitely no Carpenter for now I'll just go with "cheaper" brand, perhaps I have chance to get those slightly used jap. brands AND enjoy my time back home with fishing (ooohhhh .....Home Sweet Home...can't wait after a couple of years stuck in Aussi)

Regards,

Don't think there is such a thing as "cheaper" brands when it comes to quality specialist Japo popping & jigging tackle ....... just "more expensive" or "less expensive" brands or models. The words "cheap" seems totally out of place in this context. So be prepared to flatten your wallet. How flat it goes depends entirely on your will power ....... or lack there of ...... Happy Shopping!!!!!

Makaira,
You're right. In that case then I'll try to stop the excessive will power...can I?....
My wallet couldn't be flatter after 2 year capital spending in business school

Anyway, Makaira, could you advice me which Calstar suits Penn 975 for light jigging? I looked at GFGR 600XL (from charkbait.com), it's 6' lenght, 10-25lbs test.
Should I stick to Jigshaft BX-58? which one is more suitable ? how about brand quality wise?
Thanks a lot for your help and I'd certainly appreciate it.

Regards,

Dude ... that is an investment for the future... money well spent!!! Fishing & fishing tackle is an indulgence .. apples & oranges imho ... but real fun though!!!

Stickbom is the resident popping & jigging guru around these parts. Best to ask him for advice. I am just a lazy bait soaker & troller who is adverse to vigorous activity when fishing.

Thanks a lot for your help so far. As before I asked you about Genesis rod for jigging, now I am considering Calstar for jigging as well. My consideration is really to find suitable rod and must be tough (work horse rod) and that's what I heard about Calstar. What is your recommendation for that brand? I've heard that Calstar is heavier but can last long. I am concerned about rod's durability because I don't think I can get the warranty benefit (shipping from Jakarta to Singapore and to manufactures and back to Jakarta costs too much and hectic)

On the other hand, I have no experience in custom rods. Do you think Sabre can give me good advice on what blanks and components to be used (should I go to AO)? or do you think it might be better if I buy slightly used custom made Calstar from forum members if there is anyone willing to sell it?

Fishy2, the way I see it, UNLESS you are swinging by Singapore to have that rod custom built, it's going to be much much easier for you to buy an off the rack Japanese made jigging rod. Just about EVERYTHING cost twice as much in Australia when it comes to fishing gear so it doesn't make sense for you to go custom.

As for warranty issues, you DO NOT need to ship the whole blank back to SG as far as I know.

You can probably use a Calstar to ward off stray dogs (maybe even battle King Kong too :P ) and it'll still be in good shape after you're done. HOWEVER, Rods are a matter of personal preference and you're far better off doing your own homework and deciding which rod's action suits you better. I've known Makaira for YEARS and we still can't come to terms which is better, Japo toothpicks or Yankee Dragon Slayers.

Bottom line... buy what you can afford and dun turn back. Get something 2nd best today, thinking you saved a few dollars and you may spend more upgrading tomorrow. However, this does not mean expensive=Good
