| Super Moderator | Mac/MarkR- Need input on ABU Was wondering whats the difference between the old ABU Hi-Speed Winch and the new '06 ABU C4. Think their gear ratio is the same (6.3:1) but wonder if the Winch has better cranking power. Many thanks in advance MarkR- I never did fall for the Mamiya ABU "collectibles" :P Heng ah |

My Mood: Rep Power: 5 ![]() ![]() | Mikey, if the gear ratio is the same then everything else is most likely the same for ABUs. Maybe an extra bearing here and there but that's it. Till today they still use the generic #20907 drag stack for almost all IAR 36-65 Ambassadeurs. Only the morrum IVCB series uses the 7000 drag stack. I don't think there will be a lot of diff in cranking power either. Today IMHO, only the CT Ambassadeurs designed for long distance casting are up to the mark for the task they are designed for. Honestly, I wouldn't want to use an ABU for luring or bottom fishing anymore. A guy like you accustomed to high end Japo tackle looking at overhead reels with a 70s design? I'm with Makaira on this one, you've lost it bro! PS. Here is a pic of the every first CT Ambassadeur the 70s 6500CT, wouldn't trade it for 1000 blue, gold, brown or black mamiyas |

| Super Moderator | Thanks MarkR I use to find the colorful Mamiya 1500/2500 pretty but the prices were really shocking I'd most probably be getting the '06 5600C4 and matching it with your powerhandle |

Too smooth?? Errrm ... take the bearings out .. throw it on the beach & roll it around a bit ... the grit & sand should help in taking the smoothness out juuuuuuusssst a leeeeeedle bit lar...... Actually, if you like the "old school" kinda feeling when cranking a reel, you should be buying more Avets!!! No AR bearing ... strictly anti-reverse dog with the constant click...click....click sound to remind you as you crank. Hmmmmmmm .... how retro ..... & unique in this day & age of fishing reels. | |

| Super Moderator | hehehehe... dun like that lar :P It's true mar... if you want to truly appreciate an ABU, get the old ones and have a go at it. The ones made by Mamiya are simple Shimano/Daiwa under an ABU skin By the way, my T.D Interline is finally on its way MarkR- What's the gear ratio on that Red 55 PR |
