Smile Jigging and popping reel

hi all popping and jigging masters,
I have a question on reel for popping and jigging.
Understand there's PG reel recommended for jigging and HG reel recommended for popping. Is it a must? can i use HG reel for jigging or vice versa?
Stella 20kSW series recommended for jigging or popping?
Trying to learn to use the right equipment from masters of the masters.

Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Nice to see you in FO dude. Stickbom is one of the guys to answer your queries. It seems like a trend nowadays, PG for jigging & HG for popping. Nice if one have the money to buy both reels. Since I’m on a budget, I'll just get a PG reel for both applications. It may be a bit uncomfortable while popping but I’ll get use to it.

Regards
physlo

Re: Jigging and popping reel

Adrian ,

Match the equipments and the quarries , if your target is GT in 50+ kg then go for the sturdiest equipments but if your target is 20+ kg then either the mid range equipment should do the job .

Generally the more often you use the equipments then the more reason to buy the sturdiest ones but if you use it only once in a blue moon , may be you need not buy the most expensive ones .

Lower gear ratio is ideal for jigging while higher gear ratio is good for retrieving surface popper such as pencil type , but if you only want to buy one reel only for both jigging n popping , I recommend SW8000PG where you get 2 spools , you can fill one spool with popping line and another spool with jigging line .

wah brother, dont believe what I have been telling you ar??

One more time:

Mountain bike is a nbicycle, racer bike is also a bicycle.

You can of course ride a mountain bike for 10km on a normal road, but it will be very taxing.

You can also ride a racer on a dirt bike track, but it will also be taxing.

And like physlo said, it might be less comfortable but if you can get used to it, also no problem.

In conclusion, there is no hard and fast rule, personal preference and budget is what its all about.

1 important aspect to picking any part of a popping outfit is that they must require the least effort to work with.
My 2 cents worth.

bro its not i dont believe you, MR, physlo and sportsfisho or the rest of the masters here. I just need to know the reason behind it. The reason must be i have yet to try so all these so it will remain a mystery in me. By getting a wrong outfit will ended with another outfit. So before i get another reel i must know what im going for....right? I took all adv from u and MR seriously and maybe i need to chat with you more during weekdays...u should know what im talking about..haha

Re: Jigging and popping reel

If you're not using very high poundage lines for jigging/popping then get the Safari. It has a low gear ratio (good cranking power) and a fast line retrieval rate (good for moving topwater lures fast). The Safari might not be "high tech" or the latest toy in town but the price is right and it comes with a spare spool. Can't go wrong.

Must change the handle grip to an after market one or you won't be able to crank under heavy load , further more , bring spare drag washers .

Re: Jigging and popping reel

Jon, there was a batch of Safari reels that had a wrongly assembled drag stack. Maybe the particular piece that had its drags fried had the same problem. A lot of anglers, including myself never encountered drag failure on the Safari. Not sure if you're aware but the Safari is factory fitted with drags pretty much similar to HT100/Carbontex. As for the handle, I haven't really come across any shops selling aftermarket handles for the Safari yet so all of us were using the stock handle. The odd case or two of handle failure was probably due to factory defect or "winching" by the user. Under normal usage (pump/wind) the Safari handle will not give way so easily.

Mike ,

Ky Doucet's Safari had problem on the 3rd day in Komodo a long time ago and then the handle came off , he switched it to after market one but that reel has been retired , Ky now own 2 pcs. of STL10000Fs as his main reel .

Carbontex drag washer is the best now , in my opinion . All my Stella Fs spools and that is 6 of them are with greased carbontex drag washers , no complaint whatsoever .

Re: Jigging and popping reel

Hi Adrian,

I'm not a devotee of spinning gear but I think Narc has "hit the nail on the head"...as a rule of thumb, HG for popping and PG for jigging...most importantly get a comfortable & balanced outfit that will allow you to fish for long periods...don't want a ratio too high for jigging nor a ratio too low for popping...it's a balance between ease of use and budget if you just want to get away with one reel...I guess the Safari may be a good compromise for both applications, I recall AO used to sell an aftermarket handle for the Safari some years ago...the add-on handle does help the reel crank better...otherwise if the Saltiga route appeals, I understand that some guys use the 65 Expedition comfortably for both jigging and popping...I feel Stella 20k is way too heavy for popping and Stella 10k too fast to jig with so tough choice with the bigger Stellas if you want just one reel for both applications

Cheers,

Mark

Thks Mark,
Really learn quite afew from you guys here. Guess i have to invest in another outfit as it seems like having 1 outfit for both applications is tough.
Maybe should use overhead instead of spinning for jigging.

Merry Xmas and a Happy new yr !

Adrian

Adrian dude,

If you have an overhead like an Ocea Jigger 4000/5000/4000P/5000P or an Accurate Boss 665 Narrow with 4:1 Gear Ratios, then use that to jig dude and stick to spinning reels for popping. All you would be left to get are the rods to go with both.

If you do have to get a new overhead, the cost for a top reel like the OJs and Accurates are all substantially less than the premium spinning reels like the Stellas and Expeditions so that too is worth considering.

The advice and views given so far by our ensemble of jiggers are all very good, up to you to consider your needs and also where you would be using the outfits.

Best of luck dude,

Saimee

Hi Saimee,
Your nick really reminds me of my NS days. Agree and think will use overhead for jigging and spinning reels for popping. Thks dude !
