| Super Moderator | For under $300, you can check out the Jig Wrex B526. I've got 2 friends using this rod. One guy jigged with it in Brunei and the other goes Kurau fishing behind St. John's Island using the same rod. If I'm not mistaken the guy fishing behind St. John's is using about 1.5kg worth of lead to reach bottom cos his Jigger 4000 is loaded with 80lb braid Makaira should be able to shed some light on suitable Calstar blanks if you're keen to go the custom way |

| Super Moderator | The XL series may be alright for jigging but if you're thinking of doing any serious bottom fishing like some of our guys here, it may be a little light in the tip section. I would think the M series would be a better bet. Its not really about the line class you wanna use but the sinker size you're likely to use so do consider this carefully. |

i have a calstar 760L coup with 665n for heavy bottom to play biggie sinkers I thin the max drag for torium16 is 7kg, so I think 30lbs would be okie for the reel. As for the rod, I thin a fast action one would be good, coz I might wanna hold the set when I’m fishing to detect those bait thiefs, or can sub. for some jiggin action. So my fren actually reco me 600-700xl… this set I intend to use for mainly for southern island. And also day time for SCS and maybe Tanjung Pinang Need your expertise on the set up to get the correct rod.. Thanks for your advice.

| Moderator | Rolex dude, I drafted a long reply last night then had technical problems with my broadband and couldn't post it. Anyway, rods are a pretty personal thing and what works for me is not necessarily what will work for anyone else. Most of my own bottom Canons are built on Calstar Tuna Standup blanks, but I reckon these blanks would be overkill for Singapore waters. Mikey has covered most of the points. You might also want to let us know what your preferred rod lengths are, sinker weights, water depth, budget etc etc. Since you are running a Torium 16, I reckon that you might be able to load 300m of 50lb braid still. In that case, a Calstar GF760L blank (rated 30-80) would work out too as a custom bottom stick. There are also other blank manufacturers from the US like United, GUSA, Seeker and of course the Japanese and Taiwanese blanks. As Mikey has already suggested, the Shimano Jigwrex series is a pretty versatile bunch of rods and cost effective too. Shimano, Daiwa & Penn have off the shelf stuff as well. Will you be fishing your local Spore waters or elsewhere thats deeper?. Regards, Saimee

| Moderator | Rolex, Sorry, I missed your latest post, looks like you have answered the questions. BTW, your Torium 16 should be able to get 10kgs of drag dude, same as the Torium 20 and 30. Thats why 50lb braid would be feasible. Maybe a PE4 or 5 Wrex might work, but for fast action rods, its hard to look past the Calstars. I personally use a GF755H custom on my 665HXM. Saimee

Oh, 10 kg drag. That’s nice. Initially I was looking at jigwerk, but later I realize that the price ain’t that much attractive. So I’m exploring the idea to get a customized rod for the torium16. To my understanding, torium16 is a 6.4:1 ratio reel, thus cracking is easy, making it suitable for jigging. But with the drag power at 10kg, it works well for bottom fishing too. My main intention is to use this set for bottom fishing around the local region and daytime SCS/Tanjung Pinang. The sinker size should be around 16-20 max, anything heavier I’ll wet 665 instead. I would prefer the rod’s length not longer than 6ft, easy to shift around on boat is necessary. 1 or 2 pieces is not a issue, as my 760L is 1 piece 6ft liao. So base on this, what blank and which model will be suitable? Thanks for the information peeps, Appreciate all advices. Regards, Rolex

| Moderator | Rolex dude, A customised Calstar running all Fuji Sic Guides and Graphite reel seat from a recognised builder will probably cost more than S$350 which is why I consider the JigWrex as cost effective (around $260). I don't think that there is a Calstar blank that fits your exact requirements for a rod 6ft in length with a rating for 30-40lb line. The closest thing as you have already mentioned is probably a GF765XL. Seeker have the CJBF60 (20-40) and CJBF60H (40-60) blanks that are composite and fast action jig/bait sticks, but I have never tried or pulled on these before. That said, the latest "S-Glass" composite Super Seekers are very interesting. GUSA have the SW65H too and I'm sure you can find a blank to pull on in AO or Sabre. Maybe you might also want to look at blanks like the latest Jigging Master 300g-400g range, some guys here use these for both bottom and jig, but I personally feel that these are more jig specific sticks. Sorry that I can't offer more advice, maybe Makaira can give more insights on the US blanks. Regards, Saimee

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Hi rolexking, I am surprised you find the price of the Jigwrex not attractive. I think many would agree that with full Fuji components & priced at the mid-$200 level, it is one of the best value for money jig sticks around at the moment. Opinions differ of course. Going for a custom job would cost considerably higher, depending on the builder you use, or unless you build it yourself. Should you decide to press ahead with the custom route, imho, the new GF600M is right up your alley. It is rated 20-40, 6 feet in length. If you don't mind the length, 6 inches longer that the GF600M, the GUSA SW65XH rated 30-60 is a great choice too. Since you mentioned that you will be holding on the rod most of the time, the GUSA will be less taxing weight-wise for you being a full graphite blank. Hope this helps. Best regards, Makaira |

| Super Moderator | Was told the earlier Zeus rods were alright but subsequent batches not so consistent in quality. Better stick with the Shimano... its covered with Warranty and I've yet to hear anything bad about it yet! Last edited by stickbom! : 15-11-2006 at 05:54 PM. |
