Mikey dude, Happy NY...

Either you're preparing or you've got your Xmas/NY pressie already ... either way, how does the biggest VS compare to ye olde 9500SS

Since I know bugger all about servicing reels, the link was much appreciated and a glimpse into the internals of a VS was priceless.

Regards,

Saimee

Bro personally I'd use the Penn SS9500 for my deep jigging needs. Some may differ in opinion but I've used a VS300 before... Sure it has a HUMUNGOUS line cap but the internals just ain't cut out for offshore abuse, ESP with the newer non stretch braids

Yup I've got a pretty Silver VS150 sitting at home now

No way bro. Even if you mod the drags I doubt the internals can hack it. The VS is an ideal choice for situations where your reel might get dunked in brine on a regular basis. It's NOT for brute force kinda fishing.

Yo Mikey,

I had a feeling too. Wonder why Shikari likes the bigger Van Staals for samson jigging given that they fish ultra high drags?

cheers

I had 3 of them in the past. 2 x 100 and 1 x 300. After I sold the 300 to my friend, it totally died on him at Spratlys... had to send back USA for servicing.

Somehow I think charter captains will normally agree with their big spending customer's choice of tackle (out of "courtesy" )

Don't think customer's choice plays much of an influence, if any.
IMHO ... it more a case of getting freebie gear from the local distributor & therefore have to sing praises about it ... whatever the brand may be

that's very ture! Al always sing praises abt the services of Daiwa and i'm always wondering why so?

some owners of VS 150 claim 11kg on it and 25kg for a VS 300 on a kamikaze rod with varivas pe....base on brand new condition (tested on calibrated salter 50kg trade scales)

Mike, could you Please post some internal gearing and drag plate shots of your VS150 leh.. only seen those in their website which is totally different from seeing the thing.. haven't seen real thing before.. so please grant me the wish can? and how do they attach the handle to the reel? same like those in Saltiga or Stella where its being screw in? is there any special coating on the gearing housing?

Cheers
Mark

Mark, I'd love to cut open my VS to let you cross examine but it requires a special tool (some kinda wrench) for disassembly. This is why the reel is waterproof and does not have screws all over the housing. However, the handle is screw on, much like the Saltiga. That much I can tell you. I'll see if the drag stack can be taken apart without too much hassle this weekend. The older VS had brown teflon disk washers which are smooth but pretty weak. Hope they've change it by now I do notice some other small differences between my new VS and the older ones I had. Will show you guys when we meet up.

Bro where got ppl go up to their boss and condemn their things one

Example- "Good morning boss Heard you buy new BMW 7 series ah That's a real farked up car you know :P " Dun make sense right

Wah liew... if you doing charter business, will you go tell your customer his reel is "lan jiao gar" or his over 1K rod is "aw piao tek" Probably not right :P

Dude ... I will; but not in that kind of language lar!!!! . If a true charter captain is worth his salt, the captain WILL & SHOULD comment on the customers' gear IF it is unsuitable for the task at hand. The customer may not like what he hears, but he should bear in mind he is after all paying for the expertise of the charter; and take it in the right spirit. Of course the customer is still welcome to use whatever he has brought, but at least he has been cautioned on it's unsuitability.

I think the Van Staal Mark mentioned is the one that is on a particular charter operations in you know where. It is not one of his big paying customer's reel
