Rep Power: 0 ![]() | how to? Saltiga z30 Howdy folks... juz bot saltiga z30, how exactly do u use the knob and stardrag properly? seems so diffrent frm my abu and avet... during freespool is it suppose to spin like avet? any guides or pics for how to maintain it as well? I've recently learn how to mantain my own reels like avet,abu... but this is new to me! cant seem to find english schematics or how to use/maintain as well... no manual.... |

| Moderator | Dude, I have never used the Saltiga conventionals, but the internals and function look to be essentially the same as a Trinidad/Kaikon. So the knob that sits next to the star controls your freespool level. Tighten it to reduce freespool, if you want to counteract backlash in a cast and loosen it to increase freespool, for example where you want to drop a jig down. The star is for the drag, as with all stardrags including the Abus, just tighten for more drag and loosen to reduce drag. I have no idea how much freespool you should expect, but the reel should spin very well. Saimee

IMHO, It doesn't really matter now long a spool can spin for; for most applications, as long as it spins freely when it is suppose to; it is sufficient. How long a reel can freespool is simply a "game" or a standard the west coasters in the US use to compare the smoothness of their reel's freespool. IMHO, a reel that can spin for 40 seconds does not necessarily mean that it is twice as good as one that can only spin for 20. This "obsession" with freespool is because the long range anglers want their livebaits to run as "freely" as possible or to flip a light anchovy as far as possible without whipping it off the hook. That is specific for that kind of fishing. For what we do over here, too much freespool can actually be a pain sometimes For a lever drag reel like an Avet, the important thing is that the reel freespools at the pre-set strike drag. Of course, the general consensus is the higher the preset strike drag is; with freespool, the better it is. For star drag reels, free spooling is rarely a problem as the spool totally disengaged when the freespool lever is flipped. Saimee. please correct me there if I have the wrong. As far as servicing is concerned, if you can service your Abu, I don't think you will have any major problems servicing your Saltiga. Maintain it like you would any of your reels i.e. the more you use it, the more often you need to service it. BTW, grease will not generally not enhance freespool. In fact, it will inhibit freespool of you grease your bearings. Rule of thumb is grease your gears & oil your bearings Just my 2 cents. Best regards, Makaira | |

| Moderator | Mak, Yes, you have it right on the relation between good freespool and the total disengagement of the stardrag pinon and main gears. k2bk2b, As for the need for freespool, like Mak said its application specific, if you are not casting light baits, it should not be an issue. The knob is there pretty much to prevent overrun, thats all. I usually leave my Kaikon freespool knob at its tightest, 'cos the crew have a habit of chucking their rigs out and then leaving the rod in holder, waiting for the rig to hit bottom. Mak is also spot on about the similarities in design between your average Abu baitcaster and the Saltist. Basically they have almost the same layout and components. Good luck, Saimee

My Mood: Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Z30 has sealed gearbox so I won't recommend you to do any heavy duty servicing to it except apply some corrosion X onto it. if you bought a second-hand reel, it is also advisable to send it for servicing. A new reel then you don't need to send for servicing yet. Welcome to the club of the saltigas http://www.thefisherman.com.au/html/...html#SaltigaOH |

My Mood: Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I am pairing it now with a Expert Customed PE3-6 Rod with Jig Man X8 PE 4 Line. Depends on which area you going to use it, the option for it should be quite a lot, for example: 1. Genesis PE 4-7 or 2-4 2. Calstar 30-80 (custom rod) 3. JM 150-250gm (custom rod) 4. Riptide PE 3-6 These rods should be in sensible price range of 300-400. Other than that branded stuff would be Smith, Fisherman or Sevenseas rods. |
