Hi Fish, $100 for a rod. Many choices. Penn, diawa and Loomis & Franklin...... As for reel, can look at Tica( better than surecatch), Ryobi, Diawa....

Hi Fish,

Best is to get a minimum of 4.5:1 ratio reel so that cranking up a heavy sinker at 30-40 meters depth will not be too difficult.... There are some new entry level reels from Shimano worth looking at. Torium 16 & 20 ( abt $250 ), Ocea Jigger EV 2000 & 3000( abt $300 ), Ocea Jigger EV 2000P & 3000P( abt $300 ) or Avet MX series( abt $380)
For rod maybe a class 20-40 will be good. There is one i like: Loomis & Franklin Barra Power line class 20-40lbs. Black with red binding. Cost is abt $65-$70

Happy Shopping

Best regards,
Tunahunter

As someone fresh into the game, do look into the types of fishing you'd like to do and what you r capable of handling. There're so many brands and labels, grades and prices of tackle that you can find just by walking along the entire Beach Rd area. You might wanna take note of these points with regards to your choice of tackle:

1. What are you planning to use your intended purchase for (bottom-fishing, trolling, jigging, etc.)? Do you want a generic multipurpose set, or do you want a specialised set of tackle? Do ask ard before committing.

2. For starters, I'd recommend a spinning tackle size 2000(10lbs - 20lbs, brand depends on your budget loh). For a hundred bucks each, you can get a relatively good set of tackle. If you have interest in overheads/baitcast/multiplier tackle, then you may wanna try them before committing (go for fishing gatherings or just ask someone you know who owns the tackle for a trial). Like tunahunter noted, a ratio of 4:1 or more will do you good so as to maintain a tight line when you experience a strike and reel in.

3. Ask ard, join the experienced ones on trips and make informed decisions before your puirchase. This will reduce your capital expenditure DRAMATICALLY.

Hope that this helps you make your purchase. Btw, Fishing Buddy is a good place to start hunting for stuff, especially if you stay near Toa Payoh. Very helpful staff who will do their best to assist you in making an informed decision. If you're in Beach Rd, just take a stroll to all the shops. I personally think that Joe's is a relatively cost-effective place to start from.
