Good news for Calcutta/Scorpion/Chronarch/Curado owners!

Smoooooth Drags has released Carbontex drag washers for the Calcutta 200 and it fits a big list of Shimano BC reels. Pretty sure Sabre or Hock Heng will have it soon.

Yup, those drags will become popular.

But if you look at Alan Tani's tutorial in the link, the amount of grease used is just wayyyy too much. Also, according to the original maker of the drag i.e. Jack Erskine, the drags all come pregreased with Cals grease and do not actually need additional greasing when new. I have no idea what mixing Cals grease and Shimano drag grease would do either.

So if you guys want to use the Carbontex drags, I would suggest that you get a small tub of Cals grease from AO and then put 4 faint fingerprints of the grease on both sides of the drags just before installation, or put the same 4 fingerprints on the drag washers coming into contact with the washer.

Regards,

Saimee

Hmmm... I was thinking of installing the drag dry actually. HT-100 and similar drag types in Penn spinners and Accurate reels never had any problem when used dry so I'm going to follow suit

After seeing that tutorial with drag grease whacked on like there was no tomorrow, I was wondering when you were going to chime in Pehaps the reel is being prepared for ultralight lines that cannot have any drag inertia whatsoever & very low drag settings?

A little curious about the origins of the Carbontex -- did JE sell the rights to Smoooooth or did JE co-developed it with them or what's the story there? Just wondering ..............

Not sure but Jack Erko has something to do with the developments of this carbontex washers , he gave me free samples to test in Komodo in 2004 for my STL10000PG , the max. drag is not as high as the dartanium original drag washers from Shimano but the carbontex is a lot smoother throughout the range .

Mike,

I think the drags come pre greased, but the grease is so minimal, it looks like they are dry. I know you are a bit awry of the greased drag theory dude, but on the other hand, that Kaikon you heroically cranked the other day has been running the greased Carbontexs for over a year with the crew using it, with a lot of fish and hours on the water for no problems whatsoever. The max drag was higher than the Dartaniums too.

Mak,

Some of Alan Tani's tutorials show him wiping off the grease until the washer looks dry. Either way, I have found that my non-titanium drag plates have zero corrosion issues since I started with the Cals.

Good news ah! I just ordered 20 sets of Carbontex for Calcutta 200. Anyone using Calcutta 200/250, Chronarch 100A/100SF/100Mg, Curado, Scorpion Met XT (First Gen-Red/Second Gen-Grey/current Met Mg) and wants a set of Carbontex let me know. Each set is $8.40 and I can spare up to 10 sets max

Yo,

Those models you mentioned don't need Carbontex as they are already using drag material pretty similar to Carbontex/ HT100. Don't waste money on unnecessary "mods"

Best regards,
Makaira

hahahaha all the reels you mentioned are running on drags similar to Carbontex/HT 100. Never notice they all make the same "hissing sound" when drag is slipping meh Only reels using felt type or solid carbon washers need to change drags

Oki Doki... was bored this evening so instead of waiting till my BC reel's drag wears out... I swapped it out for Carbontex Verdict Well it's smooth and consistent even when I really buttoned down on the star drag. If only carbontex was available back in the Calcutta era

Will test out the drag tomorrow under actual fishing conditions so pray I have a good catch... otherwise cannot really give a complete verdict.

I was pretty sure this might happen after you told me the drags had come in.... Itchy hands......

Anyway, did you just install the drags "as is" or did ya put a touch of the ole C Grease on them?.... Hey, to trouble you even further, you should test the max drags with the Ctex and then swap the stock washers back in to do a comparison test of max drag and drags at the points at which you usually set them....

Regards,

Saimee

P.S> Hey get a Calcutta and load it up too then you can reminesce....

Saimee O' Buddy... you might not believe this but I don't have a spring scale :P Never got to buying one all these years. Anyway, fishing was so so today. Landed 3 small barramundi that couldn't pull line from my reel PLUS lost an unknown finned creature which I could not stop. I suspect my lure snagged on/foul hooked one of the pond's legendary "biggies" cos I did not feel the strike. Felt like a snag at first but it started powering off and I could not turn it's head. I was fishing YGK's Frontier Disk No.4 (16lb) nylon monofilament and still I couldn't slow the bugger down Anyway, I find that the new Carbontex drag performed flawlessly and I did not feel any jerkiness although my drag was pretty tightly buttoned down.

Another discovery worthy of mention... YGK's Frontier Disk must be the BEST casting nylon line I have ever fished on a BC reel. Not a single overrun the entire day and excellent knot strength Bought mine from GOOD FISHING SHOP @ Sembawang Shopping center in case you're interested to try it out yourself.

Another Calcutta Unlikely lar

Actually I bought the YGK Nylon sometime back... did not get a chance to use it till yesterday. I also bought a spool of 12lb Sufix Keylime last Friday. Will see if its any good for casting on BC reels. Anyway I've fished Sufix Seige (bright orange) and it's really decent too

I installed the Carbontex with a real thin coat of drag grease. I did not apply it directly onto the drag washer itself... I applied on the S.Steel washer and onto the main gear where the drag sits on.
