Drags

I brought an Ocea 3000 from Japan at a sale and never fished it. Just checking the drags with a full spool of line and it is quite weak. i think the specs quote this reel has 7kg drag but my reel is way down.

I haven't pulled the reel apart yet because I haven't the time nor risk losing the clicker spring. What do you guys suggest trying and don't say send it back to the store!

RE: Drags

it probably got something to do with the excessive grease on the drag, wipe it clean and reapply with a new thin film of grease should very likely solve the problem.... just dun send it back to the store hahaha.....

RE: Drags

scarpie,

Try warming it up. Firstly tie the loaded line onto a stationary object, secondly start pulling the line out for a couple of meters and then reel in. Repeat the 2nd and last process till you feel the side plates gets warm . This could do the trick like the what we do to the Saltigas.

cheers!

RE: Drags

Thanks guys. So by warming up the drags the excess grease will be squeezed out? Sounds like a good idea. Will try this & if no improvement I will pull it down and clean off the grease instead.

Scarpie,

If you do have to pull it apart, then 3 fingerprints of Cals Grease works on the stock dartanium drags or you can use Jack Erskine Carbontex drags for the Trini 16-30, those will work just fine.... Jack's drags come pre Cals greased from the factory. I reckon that you can get more drag if you want, probably by swapping out the Jigger stack for a Kaikon stack.

Regards,

Saimee

Hi Chris, I believe Shimano might have changed the carbon drags on those newer Jiggers because my Jigger 2000 had pretty weak drags too. Tried cleaning and running in my reel but did not do much good. Probably a new grade of carbon Just look at the new Toriums, Jigger NR and Jigger 4000/5000. They have incredible drag pressure right out of the box

Thanks Saimee. I'll try cleaning out the grease but if no better, then I'll get drag discs from Erskine. Is the Trini 16, 20, 30 have the same drag size as the Jigger 3000?

Scarpie mate,

Yeah, the drag discs are the same size and thickness. Jack will send you the whole set including a replacement for the fibre washer (part no.35) between the main gear and the AR gear, his drags look the biz, but I have not had a chance to test them out properly yet.

I'll say this though, the guys that have used the carbontex in Stellas and a few of the Trini family have been impressed so far.

I haven't put my calipers to the test but I reckon there could be a difference in the thickness of the metal drag washers (especially the top metal washer) in later model jiggers that accounts for the higher drags attainable. Will also check that if I have the chance.

Regards,

Saimee

DFM, I just placed an order with Jack Erskine for drag washers & machined top plate for both Jigger 3000 and 4000. Will cost me a bomb but the reels are worth it! Will report on any improvements later.

Scarpie,

I reckon they'll be worth it. Jack's drags look a load more durable and easy to service then the Dartanium washers. If they are just as smooth and give the same or more drag, I reckon most hardcore owners of the the Trini family will upgrade. I wonder if he has made any for the Saltist range yet...?

Regards,

DFM.

P.S. How much was the upgrade for the Jigger 4000, it as twice the number of drag washers as the 3000...'
