Hi Chris,

I bought this on impulse ... just wanna get something for myself before end of 2005 so i bought this reel and couple it with Genesis Amberjack Special PE 4-7 loaded with Power Pro 65# 500 yards or so.

Going to bring this reel to Sabah and hope it serves me well.

Cheers,
Edy

Jason,

Do you have any more information about it? Does that knob work like level drag when you change the drag setting? I thought star drag, we use the star to change the drag?

Cheers,
Edy

Dude ........ if I am correct, that is to adjust the freespool. While it may have some minimal effect on the drag setting, it is NOT the drag preset. It may or may not affect the side-to-side freeplay of the spool, but I am not too sure about the Ishida. Play around with the adjustment & see what happens. The red star is for setting the drag. ALWAYS remember to back off the drag when not fishing. Otherwise, with the drag discs at a compressed state for prolonged periods of time, you will lose drag power in no time at all.

Edy,

Mak is right on the money as usual. Since pretty much every Jap star drag basically functions like an oversized Abu Baitcaster (drags residing in the main gear, fully disengaging pinion gear, multiple mechanical and inertial freespool adjustments etc etc), so pretty much everything recent in star drags from the Trini-Kaikon-Jigger family to the Saltiga-Saltist family have pretty similar setups.

The knob you are asking about is to adjust the freespool in your reel. Tightening the knob will decrease freespool due to a higher amount of friction being exerted upon the right hand end of the spool shaft which sits in the knob. Within the knob itself there will probably be a number of brass or copper round/square washers.

I think Jason thought the gear engage lever looked like a lever drag lever, since the lever is pretty chunky. The only other reel with a star that doesn't have a role in the drag adjustment are the Tiburon SSTs.

That is a beauty of a reel, hope she performs as good as she looks. Pay heed to Mak's advice on the drag and a Happy New Year to everybody on the forum.

Warmest Regards to all, we are just counting down New Year in London right now....

Saimee

Shower it with flower water?

Edy, for that knob, dun loosen it too much. it will affect abit on your drag performance. just one more thing to take note, the knob to the shaft should have a safety latch but it u loosen it too much, it will fall off from your reel. Precaution my man! u wont wan it to fall into the sea while u are fishing. i use this knob to adjust the freespool effect only when i wana use it for casting. for bottom fishing, if your line can spool out smoothly means its ok.

i may be wrong again but thats how i uses this knob.

Thanks for the info.... Mak is correct about the knob. When i clock wise the knob, i can feel that the drag increase a little bit ... hmnmnmn

I really hope this reel performs since it costs me 3 years of saving

Nice reel Looks like a funky high tech Saltiga to me Love the idea of that digital line counter.

The knob is a cast control knob aka freeplay/freespool tension control. The Ishidai is meant for casting/lobbing baits from rocks hence the need for cast control.

Get the guys from AO to install a red barrel type handle (the one full of holes) for you and it'll REALLY look like a million bucks

The round handle? I am using the the stock handle now and it feels great since it is plastic material ....

Btw i bought another Genesis again ... Amberjack Special Oceancraft (PE 4-7) ... it bends better than BX 57

Cheers,

no no not the round ones... the barrel type with many holes all over. It's slanted at an angle and very comfy to hold.

Ed, I fiddled with this handle before and although it seems like a good idea, it's quiet impractical in actual usage. I found that the handle tend to swing backwards and come loose when jigging. Bear in mind that this is my personal experience and it may be a problem only for my jigging style.

I have also heard this prob . In fact i am also looking out for this reel and wanted to have this beautiful handle attached to Z 40 . Because i felt it will give more leverage during cranking . But i was advised by an us angler that although looks nice it has got a prob for jigging . I would love to know any report from any one who is using this reel along with this handle .

regards
