| Moderator | Carbontex drags ...... Hi I am intending to change my Z30 drag to Carbontex..... The current drags I find it too low...( My good fren told me that u need to warm up the drags first by pulling out line with intense drag settings. That will actually achieve the 10kg drag settings...)This might be true cos it actually squeeze out the excess grease out of the washer and drags..... I would like to know your input on this topic.... I have good impression on Carbontex after I install it on my Saltiga Z4500.... Very smooth and no more jerking drags.... Cheers Jason

All my Stella spools ( 6 of them ) for 2 reels are with carbontex drag washers , they exhibit lower max. drag than the original dartanium drag washers from Shimano . Carbontex drag washers exhibit smoother braking and last longer at the usable drag range , I put a light coat of Shimano drag grease on both sides and dry metal washers . Carbontex drag washers may not be your choise for higher max. drag and you may try the drag washers that work in " dry " condition , perhaps super smoothies can yield a higher drag but not as smooth though . Just a very thin smear of grease on the metal washer/depression in the main gear that comes into contact with the carbontex will make it silky smooth. I've got several reels with carbontex drags now and they have not given me any problems. |

Dude, I have actually already done a Carbontex conversion on a Saltiga 30 which runs the same drags as your Z30. If indeed you are after a higher maximum drag, I believe that the Carbontex will NOT be able to give you that. It will of course give you a smoother more reliable drag than the stock pure carbon ones, but max drag will still be under 10kg. As far as the stock drags warming up and giving more drag, to me that is a disadvantage, since I reckon that a drag system should provide constant predictable drag levels at all expected operating temperatures. Drags that get tighter or looser as the temperature goes up are no good dude. Imagine having a fast running pelagic like a big wahoo, YellowFin Tuna or even a mega tenggiri taking heavy drag off at high speed. If your drags get tighter as they heat up and you lose more line of the spool (increasing the drags even further), then the level of drag may increase to the point that it breaks your mainline, leader, spine etc etc.... If you want more drag dude, do a Carbontex conversion and add a thin washer in to your star drag stack to increase the pressure exertable on the drag stack. Good luck dude, Saimee

Alternatively, you can write to cal2speed to enquire whether they have the drag plate customised for Z30 as this part together with carbontex can help you to achieve higher and very consistent drag as compared to stock DP. Thanks Saimee for sharing AFDP info on OJ series. Tight Lines |
