BUSTED!!!

This is what happens when totally good equipment is used & abused beyond its recommended limits. As you can see, the graphite frame cracked & the reel ripped away from the reel seat!!! So much for the added safety of the reel clamps huh??

Wah lanz.... if your buddy can land a Blue Marlin on a TLD at Midway, that guy must have been trying to salvage the wreck of "teteknic" with his reel.

Mak is right about one thing, it's essential to use the right gear for the right job.

Yup ... an estimated 6-700 pounder blue on 50lb IGFA rated Sufix Keylime mono at about 18lb drag fishing from a full-fledged game boat with a highly skilled crew. 18lb drag setting is fishing within the limits of that reel. No problems whatsoever on the TLD50 graphite frame reel.

Looking at the busted reel in the picture, it appears the angler was using a stopshot or full mono mainline of 80#, perhaps more, and God knows what drag setting With continuous usage under such conditions, the stress on the graphite frame will take its toll for sure.

Mak,

Looking at the size of the mono, it looks more like 100lb.....and sheeessshhhh a 6-700lb Marlin on 50lb line?.... heck of an achievement dude.

As I understand it, the TLD50II is more prone to this problem since it is basically a waaayyy bigger reel than the TLD30II and yet it is using the same reel foot with the same attachment bolts and strengths....

If you were fishing 20lbs of drag on a TLD50II, I reckon you would still be ok, as long as you didn't go too far down the spool and end up increasing the drag due to the smaller spool line diameter.

Lesson for me is this..... no more Graphite body reels please. My benchmark smallish metal 2 speed is still an AVET4/02 either wide or standard. God knows, by now my crews should have broken one of the four we are using, but so far the thing has not even batted an eyelid. I will see if there is any wear during my season end big service sessions.

The moral of the story is when one enters a gunfight, don't bring a plastic waterpistol.... get out the Elephant gun in .577.

Regards,

Saimee
