Hi FOs,
Just wanted to share this for the Avet fans.....
Last week popped into Sabre Tackle & saw that the Avet SX 2spd & new model SX are in .The new SX has no rachet sound while reeling unlike the old SX,5:1 I think & it comes in many colours......hmm .....thinking of a black one... cheers.

It is silent dogs, with some back play.
Different as follow...
comes with rod clamp
Higher speed 5.3:1 (so got bigger gear housing)
Clicker knob bigger and easy to engage.
Lever drag knob bullet design
Longer/new design handle arm/knob
2 more BB (think BB inside knob)
Black and more colour (only comes in this round)
more gradual drag curve
less pressure on the handle when you apply a lot of drag
Best of all is 6 screws on reel seat!!!
Still not test-driven yet...so no comment on performance.

Can PM me how much you buy, nearly bought the old model.

About ratchered, won't it be better to have? Without it,fish take bait we wont know unless we see rod bend.

Especially at night we all are rather sleepy, and no fish bitting, sleepy yet still want to fish .....

That is a sweet reel for jigging in shallow water

I think it is time for me to check on my gears again!

Thank you for sharing.

Re: Avet sx 2spd & new model Avet sx.

Hi, I am new to the forum.

Got my sx 2 spd, but have yet to get any fish on it.

Does the back play have any effect? Why is avet not using antireverse ball bearing in their reels?

Hi bobbin,

Imho, you have to bear in mind that the Avet SX is spec'd for max 9lb strike drag with freespool. Keeping that in mind, the bearing size in the reel is sufficient as spec'd. The SX; as with most reels, is a great piece of equipment when fished within its limits.

Opinions differ of course.

Best regards,
Makaira

Hi 4sun.

The minimal backplay in your Avet reel will not have any detrimental effect to your fishing whatsoever ... so no worries about it.

As far as Avet not using anti-reverse bearings for their reels is concerned, my understanding is they are of the opinion that such bearings tend to fail occasionally. As such, they'd rather not incorporate it into their reels. Who knows ........ they may decide to change their minds further down the road.

If Alan Tani sees this thread, perhaps he can chime in on the bearing issue as he has worked on more Avet reels than anyone of us here as well as being in direct contact with the Avet people.

Best regards,
Makaira

Re: Avet sx 2spd & new model Avet sx.

Bearing sizes.... Hmmmmm....

As Mak said, for the drag specs and line classes for the SX, I am pretty sure that the small bearings will be quite sufficient.

I have seen lots of small bearings handle some nutty loads here... e.g. Calcutta 200 loaded with 30lb fireline used for GTs... etc etc...

The main enemies of bearings are Corrosion, Lack of Lubrication, Improper Lubrication and what boils down to a lack of maintenance.

That said, the quality of the bearings is also very important. The better grades of stainless steel used are vital for surviving the saltwater environment and in this case, you generally get what you pay for. AVET did have some initial problems with inferior bearings, but that was way back in the 1st Gen reels, I am sure they have sorted it out by now.

If you look up Alan Tani's various reel maintenance posts on this forum and around the net, you will also gain more insights on shielded vs unshielded vs half-shielded bearings and that is without getting into ceramic/hybrid bearings yet.

If you want a ton of info on bearings, try Boca Bearings :: Tips and Advice :: Ceramic and Steel Bearings and then look around the boca site too.

Hope this reply wasn't a bit OTT.

Regards,

Saimee

Re: Avet sx 2spd & new model Avet sx.

Hi,

I am a rod builder and have noticed that the Avet SX reel feet are really large for its size, so much so that you will need at least a size 20 reel seat to accomodate it. Has there been any change lately to this? Many thanks,

Anthony Lee

Re: Avet sx 2spd & new model Avet sx.

as for the tiny bearing , just wander ,would it be better to up size a bit to able to cast better ? as i use my sx for surf fishing rather then bottom.

Just to add on, even a PSS #20 will have trouble with older batches of SX so if anyone of you are custom building a rod for a SX please choose a T-DPS instead of a PSS!
