Avet SX 2 speed

Wonder if it's still going to be as affordable as the early batch of Avet reels. Was checking out the prices for their Pro 30 online and it seems pretty steep over in USA. Charkbait has the new JX and it looks sweet too!

Funny how every manufacturer now use offset reel handle nowaday , I believe this style of handle was pioneered by Shimano with Ocea Jigger / Trinidad series back in the last century ( before 2000' ) !

Not sure if Shimano started the offset handle... but it works great and that knob on the new Avet looks very familiar too

doesn't looks right to me with that handle knob.. feels like pasting biomater/navi/stella's power handle knob on an AVET... and yeah the price did increase ...

I like that handle and knob...... hehehehehehehehehe

The other main area of improvement I'd like to see is not so much the 2-speed mechanism, but the addition of an AR bearing on the main gear, so that the handle backplay is lessened. I reckon that would make the small single speed Avets a real viable option to the light-medium jigging crowd.

If they add that, I might get an LX or JX...hehehehehe.

Based on the literature, it is a new patent pending anti-reverse system that don't use anti reverse bearings. So there's probably still some backplay.

Thanks for the headsup matey.... The link indicates that the reel was released June last year and in that case I had the opportunity to handle it when I was in Singapore late last year.

The AR is indeed quiet, but like Makaira theorised, I found that there was still noticeable, albeit little handle backplay. I didn't have a chance to open it up though, but as I recall Joshua told me that there was no AR bearing in the reel.

I like AVET reels and have an EXW4/02 myself and my crew use 2 more. When they started out they were real value for money reels, with solid construction, immaculate machining and priced quite a way below US competitors like Accurate. They also offered key features in their larger reels which I really liked, e.g. the titanium drag plates they used and twin drag surfaces although the drags in the 4/0 sized reels were on one side of the spool only, as well as their great freespool and their being "sleeved" from the factory.

However, it appears that market realities have caught up with them as have economies of scale and their newer reels especially the larger game reels, are now pretty much on Par with their competitors for price. BUT they are still pretty good reels with solid and proven technologies.

When they first came out with the smaller 2-speeds, I really looked long and hard at the reels like the MX and LX 2-speeds. I also handled them and well, I still found "something" lacking (a purely personal something), but many others have had great success and satisfaction from these reels.

If they were to add the aforementioned AR bearing in addition to their latest patent pending "silent" AR, up the drags on the LX to 25lbs max, use helical gearing and throw in a standard offset long powerhandle the size of an EX's handle, I reckon they would be a keeper even at their competitors prices.

It is actually pretty amusing to read the reaction to the launch of the SX 2 speeds on the Allcoast board ..... comments like "if you need a 2 speed for such reels ... you better go to the gym......"

IMHO, people with such "macho" dispositions have missed the point. I believe what Avet has offered to anglers with their smaller 2 speeds is actually 2 reels in one. The concept is different from a game reel where you require a strong 1:1(ish) power low gear to retrieve line on sounding fish.

All the Avet small 2 speeds have a hi gear of 6:1 & low of 3:1, perfect IMHO for dual purpose ... the former for jigging or zipping irons for pelagics & the latter for bottom bashing. I have fished with the MX 2 speeds & actually find it an excellent reel with great cranking power even in hi gear.

As for Avet using A/R bearings. I seriously doubt the day will come any time soon as they seem to have concluded that the use of one-way bearing is nothing but trouble. But who knows what the future holds.

Just some thoughts on a boring Thursday lunch hour

avet needs to grease their drag washers. any pure teflon grease will do. they are located in southern california, very near to cal's 2 speeds and cal's sells a teflon grease. they could use cal's grease, which is what accurate does. there will be no loss of drag range on the top end. actually, it is my belief that teflon grease will actually extent functional drag range. you can go to higher pressures before the drag washers lock up.

avet also needs to do something about their bearings. this reel had three bad bearings out of six.



funny, in this reel, the drag was perfect but every bearing, six out of six, was rusted.



i'm sure it's obvious all that a reel only crosses my bench because there's a problem with it. while my view is most certainly skewed, i still can't help but think that something seriously needs to be done about these avet reels. alan
