Hmmm...interesting, insides look a little different from my old PG541 which was more "Penn-like" in nature. Guess pro gear is evolving too

No worries on your Jigger dude, you should have brought it with you the other night when I was in town and I would have opened it and measured the washers for you, 5 minutes work dude.... All I would have needed were calipers and a 11mm spanner/socket wrench. My Leatherman would have done the rest.

I tell ya what, I am pretty sure that the drags on the Jigger 5000 and 4000 are the same and I am due to service a 5000 for a friend soon so I will measure his washers and advise him to switch to Carbontex too. Then order 2 sets. That way I have spare washers and can check the drag heights and differences in drag output.

Yeah, when I first had a look at the Progears I guess I kinda dismissed them as an all metal Newell or YTS special and didn't really take a second look.

But I am looking at them now. They might not have the same cranking power as the Jap reels, but I was thinking about getting some star drag reels that could withstand the abuse of my crew.

The Kaikon has survived the experience so far, but only after extensive care and reconstructive surgery.

I had a look in my Shimano spare parts box the other night, whilst looking for a compatible bearing for an Avet MXJ and I thought to myself that I sure had done a lot of rebuilding on my Kaikon over the last 3 years, 600hrs on the water, 500+kgs of fish, the maintenance for the Kaikon had come to.... 3 AR dogs, 1 AR bearing, 1 main gear bearing, 2 Handle Bearings, 3 spool bearings, 1 sideplate cover, 1 handle, 1 set of original drags (but now using Carbontex), most of the sideplate screws, 2 Clutch engagement levers.... thats a lot of parts dude.

Maybe its just that the crew don't take as much care of the reel as they should, but my AVET EXW has certainly fared much better with only one part breaking....

So Mark, how was your PG541?.

The PG 541 served me very well on my bottom fishing trips, I recall I bought the reel from Joshua when he just moved to Changi from his old place at Jurong. I used to frequent kuching in my early 20s a fair bit coz one of my best mates is a Sarawakian. The PG 541 was a must have for these bottom fishing trips off tanjung dato

Stock washers in the PG541 I recall were old green smoothies but I quickly got the reel retrofitted with the dry 4/0 Senator HT-100 stack. Much more pressure and definitely smoother. I remember the PG541 serving me very well and helping me catch my share of ang kuehs, cobias and erons/arons?

It's been perhaps 10 years since I last fiddled with a PG

I no longer own the PG541 nor any other PG reels but browsing thru some of the stuff Mikey has written of late makes me reminisce about the good old days when fishing was a lot less complicated

If I can find a SS9500 I'll pair it with my still virgin CB-ONE Boron 84XH and jig with it in May

Saimee will probably be laughing his head off though... when/if I hook up to something decent

Saimee, I gave my 4000P to a mate to install the carbontex washers & Cals drag plate. The carbontex are for the TN40/50 which are all 6.2:1 reels. Because of the higher gears, the main gear is slightly larger making the washers about 1mm larger so the washers had to be trimmed to fit my 4000P. No problem with the drag plate as it is undersized. There might be a slight difference between 4000 & 5000 drag washers.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the tip off dude its a good one. I reckon that since the Ocea Jiggers come in 4.1 and 4.9 ratios, there is a good chance that the washers are still the same size using the 4.1 sized washers for the 4000P & 5000P. I will be asking Jack to custom cut me 2 sets that are identical to the 5000 sizing and then see how that works out. Did you have any issues with the drag stack height after installing Cals Plate?. So how have the drags been holding up?. You using Cals Grease?.

I will be dropping you an order pretty soon for those cutey yet lethal Gmktsu 1/0 Occies and I'm running out of 5/0s already. Thanks again dude.

I'm not sure whether Jack can cut you a custom washer since the TN40/50 washers are a readily available standard size. Post his reply please as I'm also interested. I whimped out on doing the washer & plate installation myself & gave it to my mate to install. No reported problems at all and I instructed him to use the Cals grease. I did not measure the improvement but I have 2 x 4000P reels which one is still standard so I'll check them both. The drags were always impressive and the modded reel seems to have more drag power, more than what I would normally fish!
