Mak,

Was that "saw" or "picked up"......

Is the production version lighter than the prototype?

Mak / Saimee ,

I fondled the prototype but a few weeks later was told by Alvin that they returned the reel to USA and was told at the time to stick with my Stella .

Re: Accurate Twin Spin 12

Saimee ........ errmmmmmm ........ "saw" or "picked up" .....for me to know & for you to find out Suffice to say, I am fortunate that I do not have a penchant for spinning reels Weight-wise, we all know that it was never going to be a light-weight piece of metal. IMHO, if matched with the right rod and getting the balance right, the weight should not be a problem. I must say they have refined it somewhat since the prototype as there was no discernable "wobble" & was very smooth when I cranked it. Of course, it can never be compared to the Stella's finesse.

Jon ...... as for replacing a Stella with this reel, it will be a hard pressed decision because it will NEVER be as smooth as a Stella; plus it has not proven itself as yet. On the toughness scale, I think it is at least on par or even more durable because of the fully-machined components / parts. Perhaps it is a reel for someone with the $$$ to spare and wants to try something different.

Re: Accurate Twin Spin 12

Hi Mak ,

The TwinSpin SR30 supposedly is the toughest reel in the market however a
few friends of mine who bought them are eager to sell their reel , they mentioned about this reel being difficult to reel under heavy load from strong
fish which indicate un-balanced and non uniform distribution of load .

Suffice to say these friends are quite dis-appointed with SR30 and they do have Stellas n Saltigas as part of their equipments so are in the position to voice their opinions ( discreetly ) but their intentions to let go the reel say it all .

The fully machined body may be tough but what about the other aspects of the reels , gear assemby which we all know nobody yet can surpass Shimano and lightness which Daiwa seems to be able to achieve although in my opinion , a Stella without TwinDisk drag would be equally as light as Saltiga of the same size . A reel is more than just the frame the gear assemblies are housed in and then comes the drag assembly and the balance , etc. , etc. .

For me , '98 Stella is still my favourite and with carbontex drag washers , they are sweet reels !

Jon .

Re: Accurate Twin Spin 12

Hi Jon,

It is virtually an impossible task for the Twinspin to win over users of Stellas & Saltigas. Just as it is hard for users of Shimano Jiggers to make the Accurate Boss their "go to" reel. Gearing technology-wise, metallurgy for reels, the Japanese are still the leaders; no doubt about it. Drag-wise, it is perhaps debatable. However, good or bad, every brand will have their own following

Best regards,
Makaira

Hi Mak ,

That is the idea , otherwise there won't be any developments in technologies , competition is a healthy way to progress and one can just take a look at FinNor and Penn , they were the leaders but now they belong to " lesser " known brand companies .

We all benefit from the competitions regardless of what our preferences and brand loyalty , I have a few Daiwas too but no Accurate ..... yet .

Not wishing to derail the thread, but has anyone tried a Penn Torque or seen/handled one?.

The main advantage that I see the conventional Japanese reels having over their erstwhile US counterparts is in the gearing and energy transfer efficiency department.

Most US reels use straightcut gears and I have always found and thought that helical cut gears were a lot smoother and more efficient in converting power at the handle to power at the gear....

Now the Penn Torque apparently not only runs helical cut gears, but also very wide gear surfaces, which sounds very interesting to me. That and the fact that it is an all machined reel where frame and sideplate rigidity were one of the main design parameters from the start, really has my interest piqued. It also runs an AR bearing and twin AR dogs...

As far as spinning reels go, I think we all agree that the Japs are still way ahead in terms of R&D into what makes a GREAT spinning reel. There is much more to the engineering than just stainless steel gears, machined bodies+components, titanium drag plates and carbonfibre drags.

But we should also understand the markets that these reels target. The US market is very much in favour of machined heavily overbuilt reels, simple components and minimum maintenance. Top of the range Jap reels are far from simple and their engineering is keyed to smoothness and proper balancing of the forces in the reel.

I always said that I wish I could have the smoothness of Jap reels with the simplicity of US reels, but I must admit that I have yet to find something that fulfills both criteria... I probably never will. Anyway, it would take half the fun out of my fishing if I never had to crack open my reels and figure out what I would like improved more.

Regards,

Saimee

I totally agree with your frank and brave opinion.

The root of the problem with these companies lies in leaving all the R&D works to the CNC machinists and test anglers. On the other hand, the Japanese companies adopted a multi-disciplinary approach to produce their fishing equipments in a much shorter lead time. For the time being even for OH reels, Shimano is well ahead with its Jigger and this is through her quick and quiet learning of small mistakes committed in the design of the Kaikon. Unless there is a radical change in the Jigger’s spool or drag design, IMO, I do not foresee any new model coming into the market in 2007.
