Rep Power: 4 ![]() | Urban Reservoir Read from the papers that S'pore River ,Clifford Pier ,Kallang River etc will be turn into a fresh water resevoir 3 years down the road ... Really hope that its just a fake proposal . It is such a waste when the marine life there are making a come back as run off from rains that carries sediments and waste have been reduce due to activities like reclaimation works and constructions etc .which have been slowing down around those areas .. The whole marine eco-structure there will be totally gone very soon . |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | RE: Urban Reservoir Its partly for the good of Singapore people. With the rising demand for water by big factories in Singapore, PUB is pumping water from Malaysia even more. The past years, Malaysia is threatening to increase price on supplying water to Singapore. To be independent we came out with New Water plant. But I can tell you this is still not enough. We need as much water as possible. With the last 2 months drought I can tell that we would be out of water within a month without Malaysia water. Just go to USR and you can see the sandy banks that was one time filled with water. PUB is pumping water from Malaysia 24hrs non stop and still the water level is falling. From what I understand PUB is pumping water from Malaysia into Kranji Reservior and then to USR, LSR, UPR,LPR & MR. You can tell the sentiment is not good between Malaysia & Singapore when NEW Water was introduced. Especially when the Gov was toasting YAM SENG on TV. Its like telling Malaysia, you can't touch me. When the contract expires we will be self sufficient and free from your control. Water is something many take for granted when its plentyful. In times of war, its something more precious than money. Look at the Tsunami victims, they fight for mineral water from SAF. You are right to say the whole eco structure will be gone. On the other side, we can hope for freshwater toman, peacock bass, tialpia, belida, soonhock, freshwater barramundi to target. Then again becareful of the rangers who will be patrolling the area for illegal fishing. |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Hi, To put things into perspective, here is something for all to reflect upon. While there is a general school of thought that the next BIG war will be for fossil oil (some say it has ALREADY begun with the Irag war), there is another more interesting thesis: The next BIG war will be for WATER!!! This isn't too far fetched. With global warming & other abuses to mother nature, long periods of drought already prevails in many parts of the world. In the USA, there are on going court battles between neighbouring states to water rights of rivers that transgress state borders. Our neighbours has every opportunity to use water as a weapon against us; should they choose to do so. As such, losing the ecosystem at the proposed water catchment area of Singapore River & Kallang Basin is nothing compared to what may happen in the future if Singapore does not becom self-sufficient in water. Opinions differ of course. Best regards, Makaira |

| three big gains from the government: 1) to act as a tidal barrier for flood control 2) to create a new reservoir to augment our water supply 3) to maintain a new body of freshwater at constant level in the heart of the city as a major lifestyle attraction One big lost for the angler: 1) No more saltwater fishes! |
