Top or Bottom

Just curious, if you're fishing less than 100m of water most of the time, would you-

1) load 200m of PE4 at the base of your reel and load 100m of 50lb Powerpro topshot

or

2) load 100m of 50lb Powerpro at the base of your reel and have the 200m of PE4 as topshot

I'm leaning towards having that 100m of Powerpro as topshot. What would you do?

Re: Top or Bottom

and why would you have 2 different lot of lines on a reel when its obviously easier to have a full spool of one line???

Mike ,

Get a sparespool , one for PE4 and another for 50 lbs. PowerPro . Better still , have 2 separate outfits for the tasks .

Re: Top or Bottom

Jon, the reel in mind is a Ocea Jigger 2000NR, spare spool option can't really be applied here. Hon-Su, I have several individually packed, 200m spools of PE4 at home... picked them up at a bargain but having a hard time trying to figure out where to use it. Anyway I thought it would be more cost effective to change 100m of topshot instead of 200m every year or so. Especially when the bottom 2/3 hardly sees action.

Re: Top or Bottom

there are way too many combo that you can have..

1. join a 200m PE4 with 1/2 spool of the other 200m worth of PE 4
2. use mono as backing before loading with your PE4 line
3. sell both spool of 200m PE4 line at a special rate to finance a spool of brand new 300m PE4
4. just load 200m since you'll always fish less then 100m
5. buy a 1500NR so that those 200m spool will fit in nicely

p.s. there are always certain reason why good selling items are being thrown into the bargain bin don't you think so???

Re: Top or Bottom

Think I'll go for Mark's suggestion no.4 Will load the 200m in and see if it's at least 3/4 full. Unless its way too empty I shall not top up with the PP50lb. Thanks!

I think the 200m spools went on sale only after Saurus went bust... They are good for lighter casting purpose where you don't need more than 200m of line.

Re: Top or Bottom

Dude, you got PE#1 or 2? Would like a backup for my light outfit.

Also, you can try joining the lines? I used a bimini on both sides with a short hollow spectra sleeve to loop-loop the 2 ends. Works so far?

better use the PP 50lbs as backing than to expose it, my reasoning:
1. mostly the top 200m is most frequently use, the last 100m is mainly for safety purpose
2. why introduce another knot/joint where you knows it is surely the weakest link at 100m

Re: Top or Bottom

I prefer 150m PE-4 and backing mono 50lbs 100m..... that's for fishing up to 100m of water. My reason is simple, mono is less expensive. And backing is backing, which is in the real fishing I never use it 'till now.
