| Administrator | Thousand of dead fish Nov 8, 2005 JOHOR BARU, Malaysia: It was not a scene that photographer A.K. Wong wanted to capture and it shocked him when he saw thousands of dead fish floating in the sea off Lido Beach. “Initially I did not pay much attention as I thought only a few fish had washed up on the beach,” said Wong, in his 60s, who was at the beach to capture the sunset. The fish, popularly known as ikan bandang susu among locals, were found along a 1km stretch during low tide at 6pm yesterday. It is still unclear what caused them to die. Ikan bandang susu, used in making spicy soup, is abundant in the waters off the beach. Last year, thousands of ikan tamban were found strewn on the beach. It was reported last year that the mercury content in the water along the Johor Straits was two times higher than the acceptable standard. REPORTED on STRAIT TIMES. |
